Re: have we discussed

  • And moo's mom wasn't interrogated in 98 because we were allowed to bring knives on planes then.

Just like no one was saying ANYTHING would be okay, no one's saying there should be no regulation at all.  I think not being able to carry weapons on a plane is probably a good idea.  But there's a happy medium between boxcutters for everyone and virtual strip searching.

What if they put in screening measures like this for trains, for using the interstates?  What about public spaces like shopping malls?

I can choose not to drive on the interstate.  Sure, it means losing my job, but thems the breaks.  For many people, not flying means losing their job.  Or not seeing their family, ever.  It's not really a choice.

Valid legislative concerns, but not Constitutional ones.

I know the difference between legislation and the Constitution, but in this case, your distinction confuses me. Explain? In as little legal jargon as possible, please.

  • Heh, looks like us lucky Bostonians won't have to worry about naked pictures for long!

  • I remember the day I woke up and read the warrantless wiretapping story in the news and I thought, "Oh boy, this is finally it, the sh!t is going to hit the fan!" And then nothing happened and some people made some feeble defenses about "if you have nothing to hide, why do you care who listens...."

Anyway, I am anti-scanners and have been anti-liquid ban, etc., too.  I have no problem flashing my boobs to strangers, but only when I choose to.  You don't get to tell me to show them!  My main reasoning is basically the whole "those who sacrifice their liberty for safety deserve neither" thing.  I care less about being safe than I do being free.  Living in a free country is dangerous.  Crazy people are free to be crazy.  It comes with the territory.

Plus none of this crap actually works (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2008/11/the-things-he-carried/7057/).  I'm actually quite surprised these groups are still even bothering with planes anymore.  Everyone in this country seems to know the most awful attack would be in a shopping mall in a small town (soft target, feeding the "it could happen anywhere" fear, impacting retail, etc).  The fact that they are still trying to get on a plane instead is confusing, yet reassuring of the apparent stupidity of the people planning this stuff.

Nest this. I think it feels different from the Patriot Act for a lot of people because it is a physical violation and its f*cking with peoples kids.
