To those who have had babies, are current pregnant, are thinking about having babies, or have fur babies......
How hard was it for you to decide on a name?
Did you know/do you know the name before they are born?
How can you be sure it's the right name?
DH and I are struggling with names. I really wanted to be one of those people who just "knew" the name before baby came so I could get some monogrammed/personal baby items. We got back and forth every day. I know I have a while yet until I'm forced to pick a name (my goal is to name the baby before we leave the hospital, haha). Is anyone else stressing over this?
Re: BR: Names?
I'm not PG (yet), but names are something that we talk about A LOT.
Unfortunately, H and I have very different tastes in names. We both have lists that we're working to narrow down for when I actually do get pregnant.
As for knowing the name before they are born and choosing the right name, a lot of people have told me that "you'll know when you see the baby". I know it's generic advice, but I sort of agree. You can have a name picked out for months, years.. etc, but when you see your baby, you might be like "that doesn't fit!"
I had a cousin that didn't name her baby until he was home for almost a week because her and her H couldn't agree on a name.. lol. I think it's a common thing to stress over.
H and I are kind of freaks, and settled on baby names before we were even engaged...lol. Our boy name is 100%, and we did have a 100% girl name but sometimes I consider changing it. He never likes the new girl names I come up with, though, so we'll probably go with our original pick.
We got lucky, and it was an easy conversation for us. Literally, one conversation, and it was in the shower, so you know it was fairly quick. I don't know how we did that, because as I've found with my new girl name suggestions, we have very different tastes in names.
Middle names were pretty easy, though -- his dad's middle for the boy, and my grandmother's maiden for the girl.

Before we were pg, we thought we knew the names we wanted. Now we are in a crunch and do not have names- we need to get on it really quick! I know the middle names (boy is Thomas - after my father and girl is Jane which is my middle name, was my mom's middle name and is my grandma's middle name) - I dont really know what we are going to do for first names. I know I will more than likely wait until we meet the little one to name it- however, that time is coming quicker than we would like.
Before we were pregnant, and for the past 3 years we just knew our first son would be named Noah. Well, as soon as I got pregnant and found out that we are expecting a son, I'm not too crazy about the name anymore. I still like it, but I know so many little boys with the name Noah, so it's lost it's charm.
I have no problem sharing some of our favorite names. I know that they are not going to be everyone's style and have accepted that.
Girls for us are easy: Scarlett, Charlotte and Willow are our favorites.
For a boy I guess we're considering: Noah, Levi and Carter.
I'm glad that I'm not alone!
I think we have our boy name down to one for sure, maybe a 2nd possibility. Finding a boy mame was pretty easy although there was one name I really loved that DH hates so that's off the table. Girl names are really hard for me. I have a few that I love, two DH doesnt like at all, the rest he likes but doesnt have a strong opinion on either way. The name that is and has been at the top for a girl I keep going back and forth on. Middle names for a girl were easy. Harder for a boy.
Just a few more weeks and you'll know what you're having (if you're not team green, that is)! I found out at 12 weeks, but I think that's an anomoly.
Joel and I had our girls' name picked out forever, like years ago, I believe just after we got engaged we were discussing names but it may have even been before that. Our little girl will be Sophia, idc that Teen Mom has made it popular again because of stupid Farrah or that it's one of the top ten baby names even though I always swore I wanted my kids, if I ever had them, to have unique names. We haven't decided on a middle name for her yet though.
Boys names were impossible for us to agree on though. It took us FOREVER to come up with options that we both liked. We also couldn't pick before we saw our son. We narrowed it down to three names and decided that since none of them stood out we'd wait until we saw him to pick his name. We knew that Solon needed to be in the name (it's Joel's middle name, his father's middle name, his grandfather's first name, his great grandfather...etc.) making our son the 7th generation to have Solon as part of his name.
When baby boy was delivered and Joel brought him over to the table for me to see, he asked what I thought, and I was crying and couldn't see his face at that angle so I asked Joel what he thought and he said "Solon Alexander" and I said "Let me see!" He tilted him so I could see his face better and I said yes, "Alex." You really do know in that moment, or at least we did and I'm glad we waited because the day before we were leaning more towards Ian, and Alex definitely doesn't look like an Ian to me.
When we saw our puppy online I just knew she would be Layla Grace. Jon agreed.
We have talked about our future kids names since we were dating but every so often we toss out new names to each other. I think the problem we will face someday is that we both have a long list of names that we both like.
Plus we have a very long last name, so we have to try and keep the first name as simple as possible.
I love, love, love the name Carter. I think it's one of those names that really carries through your whole life; it's really cute when your little but still appropriate when you get older and are trying to get a job!
Funny story about the name Noah. My sister wants us to name our hypothetical, future son Noah just so that if he ever has to take pledge or an oath he'd say "I, Noah[know a] Beaver..." She thinks that's hysterical as does Jay. Just thought I'd share.
This is the same for us. I like more Italian girl's names ( ex: that end in an "a") but J doesn't think they will "fit" or sound right since our last name is far from Italian.

Eh, I just have phantom babies to name so far, and that's easy. ;-) I just thought I'd say that we have very similar naming styles, and I LOVE Carter. I use to love Noah, but I see too many of them at school that it's lost it's pizzazz for me. This happens with a lot of names. I think being two teachers we'll have a really hard time deciding, because everything feels taken or overdone.
Anwar had his girl name before marriage. I was all over the place with names. Then I found the perfect boy name for us. He agreed and liked it equally. I wasn't a fan of his girl name, and we settled on a different name that we both love.
I'm getting worried that my boy name will blow up and be some 'trend' name. Makes me want to have a kid sooner.

OP said fur babies count.
How hard was it for you to decide on a name? It was difficult. We had alist of our top 6 or 7. Eddie didn't like my top 2 names, but his fave was my 3rd choice. We then agonized over it being the right name for about... forever. Still are agonizing over it.
Did you know/do you know the name before they are born? Yes. We have his name in letters in the nursery, but we are keeping it a secret and reserve the right to change our minds once he is here.
How can you be sure it's the right name? We can't. I don't think anyone ever can. But after a while of thinking of him by his name and talking about him by name, it seems to fit really well.
You are not the only one stressing, I am sure. We stressed over it a lot and we still do a bit. I kind of just want him to get here so it can be "done".
I have my NT scan next week ( will be 12w5d). I have heard that if it's a boy, they "may" be able to tell that early.

We totally had names picked out...before we even got pregnant. And to be honest, I don't remember asking "does she look like a Phoenix". That was just her name and when I look at her now, she doesn't look like anything but a Phoenix.
Don''t forget though, you can have a few names picked out, but wait like a week or two to actually decide a name. Give yourself a chance to see which will fit the baby the best. Then you can throw a naming day party, where you introduce your baby by name to your friends and family.
And for the record, I love the name Willow
Legit question: I thought you were required to have a name on the birth certificate before you can leave the hospital. Is that not true? Is there a loop hole?
There is actually a Nigerian tradition to have a naming ceremony. My niece had a huge naming ceremony.
They did pick out the names prior, and I knew it. But it is supposed to be a secret until the ceremony.

You know, I don't know for sure. Since we already had a name picked out I didn't really pay much attention, but I have heard that too. There must be a loop hole though, because I know that there are several cultures where waiting a few weeks to decide the name is important or as Smo pointed out, naming day celebrations are really big. Gah, that was only 6 months ago and I totally don't remember the birth certificate process, lol.
Names are hard for us to agree on. We are both VERY picky!
If we have a boy, his first name will be Dennis. Josh is apparently the 13th Dennis in his family (but he goes by his MN, Josh). We will do the same for our boy...even though I'm not a fan of Dennis, I can't really break the tradition. We both like Declan for a boy, but I don't know if I'm 100% on it yet.
As for girls, we don't like any of the same names at all. Everything I suggest to Josh he just dismisses....yet he has no alternative suggestions! Ugh. I like Charlotte for a girl, but again I don't know if I'm 100% on that either!
This is much harder than I thought it would be!

So I'm basing this knowledge entirely off of the novel The Namesake, lol. They were Indian, and their traditional naming process had hit a snag so they needed to wait, but the hospital wouldn't let them leave without choosing a name. Hmm...I'm going to research this now. I'm curious.
I'm pretty sure you're required to name the baby prior to leaving the hospital. I know that at least here in New York you are required to, but I don't know if you can get around it if it's a religious reason or something?
At our NT scan, the tech wouldnt even guess. So dont be too disappointed if that doesnt happen, Mrs. Mo.
I want to know right this second. I am not a patient person.
As for furbabies, both dogs picked their names. We had 3 picked out for Buddy: Buddy, Jax, and Oscar. Danny & I couldn't decide so we put all three on paper slips, tossed the slips on the carpet and the one he tried to eat first was his name. Benny's pre-adoption name was Eli. We liked Eli, but he didn't seem to respond to it at all, so we decided to change it. We talked about names the entire 3 hours home from State College and about 2 hours after. Couldn't decide. So Benny was sleeping (deep sleep, twitching) on the couch and I was listening to iTunes. Benny and the Jets came on. I said to Danny, "How about Benny?" And Benny woke up, lifted his head and wagged his tail. And henceforth he was Benny.
Kids are an entirely different story. Danny and I have SUCH drastic taste difference our kids will probably be Number One and Number Two. Plus it's hard for me to find names (especially boys names) that I like because of my kids at school. I work with a lot of the kids with behavior problems (in addition to the ones with autism) and Danny will bring up a name and I'll be like, "No, that brat bit me....that one spit at me....that one's whiney...etc."
We used to have 100% names picked out for both boys and girls. But with the boy names I've had 3 friends/acquaintances name their boys my boy name. I always said I wanted the name to be "different, but not weird." I liked being the only Mallory until I hit my senior year of high school.
