    Brianna, hugs!  I'm sorry.

I could not have listened to that radio station - I would have been in pieces.

So, I work near downtown, and our admin just decided we need to go out to a farewell lunch tomorrow for our dept head... but she doesn't know where.  She wants nice American food in downtown (and I'm adding Uptown to the list of possibilities) and wants it to be less than $20pp... any suggestions?

I'm not too familar with resturants downtown, but what about Twisted Root Burger (near SMU) . Its SO good, and there are all KINDS of burgers. DH and I had buffalo and it was amazing, and the fried green beans are out of this world good!

I would like to start couponing, but I'm clueless as to where to begin.  Do you go to different websites?  Sunday paper? How the heck to do you save $46 on $150 much less get $600 for $0.32?! Oh my...

The people who get $600 for nearly free devote 40+ hours a week to couponing and buy coupons from clipping services and some even dumpster dive for people's un-used papers. That is WAY too much for me to do, so here is what I do:

I clip coupons from the Sunday paper and also keep the Walgreens and CVS inserts. I get the Albertson's ad weekly in the mail and keep that too. I also use coupong blogs to help match up deals to maximize coupons and also get more coupons from online printables. Krazy Coupon Lady, Hip2Save, Wild for Wags, Couponing 101 and My Frugal Adventures are all good blogs for this. You can also do something called the Grocery Game, where she does all the work for you and you just print lists and go, but it has a monthly fee I don't feel like paying.

I make a list of everything we need, a lot of which (milk, eggs, etc.) I probably won't have a coupon for, but some of which I will. You need to start clipping coupons about 3-4 weeks before you really start seeing savings, it's about matching the coupons to the sales, which the blogs help you do.

The idea is to make a stockpile - a SMALL one, not a giant hoarder one - of things you know your family will use. You only buy things when they are on sale and then you save pretty good amounts of money. One thing that is hard for me is that you can't really be brand loyal and do the big saves - you have to really be able to eat whatever cereal is on sale or use whatever body wash has a coupon.

This does take some time - usually about an hour or two a week, but the $$$ saved is worth it.

ETA: For some reason my links aren't working - you can google all of those names and the first things that come up are the correct sites.

Sweet! That's insane that people spend that much time clipping coupons.  To each his own, I guess... I'll be sure to check out those blogs and let you know how it goes.  Thank you for the great info!

    DANG!!!!!!!

DH wants me to start clipping more coupons.  I told him to buy the papers and give me few hours a week to get the best deals and we can start but that when we go to the store it's just me.  I told him if I devote this much time to cutting and research, him and SD aren't going to go with me and throw a bunch of extras in the cart!

    WOWZA that's awesome!

  • Brianna - I would hate to be behind her in line.

So, maybe I am way off base here..... but if I put a $ value on my free time and multiply it by the # of hours it takes to orchestrate this... and add gas and wear and tear on my vehicle from driving all around town to different stores.... have a I really saved at all?

My math says I've lost.   I go and I buy what I need.  Once and done.

  • ITA, Tiffany.  I hate going to the store as it is.  I don't want to become THAT lady.  Plus, who really has the time to go by red grapes at Albertsons, apples at Sprouts, and tomatoes at Tom Thumb just because they're on sale.

I have a dear friend whose ex used to go to the store and only buy things on sale.  Nevermind that no one would eat what he bought.  That seemed really wasteful to me.

Opportunity cost and I agree Tiffany. I'm the same way. But, maybe her time isn't worth crap to her. And, maybe she has like 10 stores within a 3 mile radius.

One lady had bags and bags of diapers.  She said she had enough diapers to last her two years.  She didn't have any kids.

  • I agree with Tiffany that its just not worth the time but then again I am not a bargain or budget shopper at all.  I am very brand loyal.  I ONLY use the red charmin, I only use Viva paper towels and so on.  When we lived with the IL's they just bought whatever was on sale for EVERYTHING.  Different TP every.single.week, they even bought different cat food (not good for the cats) depending on what was on sale.  I just couldnt do it, I wish I could because we would save a ton of money but I cant.
  • Have any of you seen that new show Happy Endings? If you haven't, watch it on hulu. It's so funny!

I am not brand loyal at all.  I just buy whatever is cheapest.  Except with the dogs.  I defintely don't change their food around or anything.  But DH is a lot pickier about stuff like toilet paper and paper towels.  I just really don't care.

There is also a Twisted Root in Deep Ellum (off Commerce, I think).  That's close to downtown.

Tiffany, I totally agree about the $ on my free time.  There was a thread about this a while ago asking this very question.  Maybe Julie started it?

I'm just glad there is a supermercado down the street from me.  I just went there over lunch to get fajita stuff for dinner tonight with friends.  I bought fajita meat, peppers, onions, cilantro, avocados, tortillas, chips, rice, and some freshly baked mexican cookies for $16.  Their produce is cheap but really good quality.  I love that place, and no coupons needed!

Speaking of cakes...who was it that was doing the funfetti cake for their wedding?  Or was that from another board?

One of my good friends that got married on April 1st did a confetti cake.  It was YUMMY!  I think she used to post a little bit on TK....maybe more on the April 2011 board.

I think that's who I am thinking of!  It was someone from my month board :-)

Yep, I think it was because I saw a picture of them eating the cake on the FB group.

    Is this her?

  • This may be TMI but I'm really just kinda annoyed and frustrated that I need to get it out there somehow and DH just doesn't understand.

So I told y'all a few weeks ago I had a UTI.  Well later that week I got a call from the dr saying it wasn't a UTI so stop taking the meds and still follow up with the urologist to make sure it wasn't something else.  Well I went to the urologist Monday and he told me that I just had bacteria growing that wasn't getting flushed out of my system like it's suppose to when you pee.  He gave me an antibotic and said it should clear up in a few months.  I get a call today from my OB-GYN saying that my test results from my yearly exam came back showing an increase in "bad" bacteria and that they needed to run some more test.  She asked if we were still trying to get pregnant and I said yes.  She said to stop right away because if I have what they think I have it will cause me to miscarry.  Well DH and I find out in about a week if we are or aren't pregnant this month.  I don't understand why as soon as we start trying to get pregnant I have all these issues down there that might mess up our chances.

I know your first instinct is to worry, but really try not to.  I'm sorry you feel you are having issues right off the bat.  Hopefully you will go in and the doctor will prescribe something that will take care of everything.  Try to remain positive.  :)

    Third Anniversary

Dana, I think everything happens for a reason... right before we found out we were pregnant, I had a slew of health problems come up from chest pains to lower back pain, to more TMI stuff, etc... which required me to get a super intenstive checkout of pretty much my entire body. Thankfully everything checked out as clear, and I am actually glad now that I did check everything out to make sure that I am at my optimal health and know everything is working order before I got pregnant.

Hope this bacteria thing will clear up soon and you can put it behind you. :)
