Baby names, always a favorite subject...

Does Leland sound like an old man name?

I'm mean, it probably does since the only Lelands I know are old men.  Thoughts?

Re: Baby names, always a favorite subject...

  • Not really. My former uncle (my aunt divorced him) is named that and no one seemed to have a problem with it.

  • Leland is my BIL's middle name (he's 34) and my nephew's middle name (he's 9).  It's a very traditional British name.  I like it!

I don't think it's old man sounding at all.  Older, more traditional names are making a comeback!

  • I think Leland is in the lead for boy #2 if we ever decide to bless T with a sibling.  I have NO idea on a girls name.  I need something old, European-sounding, pretty, and uncommon.  Ha!  Good luck with that...

I think I need to get in touch with your MIL.  I really like her style.  Ha.

My MIL is pretty awesome!  Although, I think my FIL had a big part in naming the three boys.  My H is named after both of his grandfathers, but the younger two have really British names.  The island that my FIL is from is formerly a British colony, so everyone in his family has similar names.

  • I really like that name. Though the first thing I thought of was Jim Leyland and the Tigers. So it gave me a smile. Not sure if the association would bother you. Are they pronounced the same way?

    That is very cool.

Yes, pronounced the same.  And the association would probably only bother my H, as he is a huge Cubs fan.  Wink

Haha. So I take it you are not open to Quade? ;)

Thanks, there are some great names on that list.  Antonia, Beatrice, and Louisa are on my list, but H will not go for those.  :)

I enjoy going to the SSA website and browsing name lists from the late 1800's and early 1900's.  There are a lot of good old names on those lists!

Luisa was my H's grandmother's name. Wink

Are his brothers single, by chance?  Seems like I'd fit right in.  Haha.  Stick out tongue

Technically yes.  Although, the middle brother has two kids with his ex and as a result they are still pretty involved in each other's lives (although not romantically involved).

The youngest is totally single, but needs to do some serious growing up (despite being 30) and getting his life together before I would suggest him as a good dating prospect for anyone.Stick out tongue

    lol.

  • A friend from high school named her son Leland. He's a bit older than Mere now. I think of him first, then Jim Leyland when I hear the name :)

I have a really old school but probably going to end up popular name picked out if we ever have girl #2.

  • I like it.  I think it goes really well with Tennyson.  I too am thinking of the Tigers too though.  Just be ready to have to answer the question if he is named after Jim a million times.  Just like I always have to indicate that I know that Simba was a boy in Lion King and I named my female chihuahua after him.  Who cares.

  • I like Leland.  I don't know anyone named this, and usually associate it with being a last name, but I think it sounds nice as a first name.

The in-laws named all of their kids very English/Irish family names, Andy's middle name (Kennedy) is his grandmother's maiden name and then his brothers are Graham, Lenon and Leo.

  • I really like the name Lennon and still think it should have been my nephew's name since he was born on 09-09-09.

  • I like it too.  I had never heard it before either.  I like "different" names...my DH, not so much, so we settled on Noah.  Not "popular", but not too "different" for my DH.

I have a friend with a 2 year old named Jasper.  Which I love!  Soooo many people associate it with Jasper, the character from Twilight.  (Well, that and a few people have said "Jasper the friendly Ghost"...UMMM, it's CASPER people!)  I felt so bad for her and her DH at first...since they had not even read the books and had no idea.  I felt like having a onsie made for him that said "No, I am not named after the Twilight character".

I have liked the name Pippa.  Someone that I used to work with named her daughter that.  But I am sure that one might get popular again with Princess Kate's sister.

  • Fun post. My Friend I were just talking about kids names last night.

I like Lillian Rose, Aria, Isabella, Aurora. I also like Pippa.

Boys names I don't have a lot just two William Charles & Jeffery Scott.

I thought the same thing...I also had an Uncle that was an older man with that name.

You know a Tennyson, too, right?  I feel like I remember you mentioning that once...

Jim will probably be long gone by the time we make a decision to have number 2.  Because I'm sure once we make the decision, it will take us another 2 years to actually get pregnant again.  :)

Simba ends in an "a", and in most languages, "a" ending = feminine.  I think you are good to go!  :)  I like the name too and think it fits your doggy.

  • I know a Tennyson! Not sure if LVila does too...And tonight I told my nephew that one of my friends really likes the name name Leland. He said "That's my middle name!". It was cute.

The Tennyson I 'knew' was at a school I worked at a few years ago and she's a girl :)

  • Leland reminds me of one of the nicest volunteers I worked with at Habitat for Humanity.  He was Brittish and 60.  I love the name.
