Did anyone here have a chance to try any Grandwiches? I missed most of the judging period, so I didn't get to taste any. I want to live vicariously through you if you did.

I haven't.  The only place that we've visited lately was HopCat and their sandwich didn't sound or look appetizing to me.

Diana, your electrician's rates sounds great.  Better than I've ever found in GR.  And your project sounds like it was a great learning experience!

I also thought their rates were good, but it's nice to know it's not just in my head!

  • Okay, Christmas vacation research is complete (AZ will be the destination, with a few details like whether we can work in some Sedona time and exact dates still TBD).  Car registration renewed.  So I'll probably get back to reading about how to excel on law school exams...

    Have a good afternoon!

Found out my SIL is having a girl! First girl grandchild for my ILs. This kid is going to be spoiled!:) They lost their last pregnancy at 18 weeks, so super excited for them!

I am the only granddaughter on my dad's side (out of only four grandchildren total) and can attest to the spoilage that happens to these girls.

    Unfortunately for L, I'm pretty rotten :P

HAHA...love it!  I think my two nephews (6 and 5) who will be the big brothers are going to be like "WHAT?!?!?!" when this new baby girl comes and gets spoiled rotten.  And I will be into the spoiling thing...girl clothes are sooo much fun to shop for!

  • Lol. I know, right? I'm such a nerd that I'm actually liking the book! I should really go for a run to enjoy this lovely day. I'm now flipping through a timeshare catalog thinking about all of the fantastic places to travel.
  • DHs birthday is coming up on the 17th and I asked him what he wanted...he said a chocolate cake and ice cream.  I had to giggle thinking of D&Ms tales of b-day gone bad and gvsu's "bad wife" story.  Now I am nervous!  Wink

The Hopcat Grandwich looked out of control. Ha. I had the one at Bobarino's. It was very good and came with a warm apple and walnut tart and sweet potato nest. Yum.

Seriously!  I like all of the individual elements of that sandwich, but put together?  No, thanks.

  • This afternoon is crawling!  I can't believe it's not only 2:00.  Talk about BO-RING.

  • I just ate about half a jar of jalapeno dill pickle slices. It as hard to stop - so good.

I love jalapeno.  And I love dill pickles.  But when Jim brought home a jar of jalapeno dill pickles (not sliced), I didn't like them at all.  I suspect I'm a dill purist.

  • I just went for a 5km jog.  Even after a shower I feel sweaty.  I do miss my office's 68* a/c.

My cat has decided she wants attention this afternoon.  It's funny how on day 2 of me staying home she wanted nothing to do with me, but right now if I'm not petting her, she's meowing and pawing at me.

Please tell me about your dilly beans. I have never had dilly beans and I suspect I would love them.

  • I love jalapenos and dill pickles and suspect I would probably like jalapeno dill pickles.  I think it's my love of all things salty that's to blame.

I would probably also like dilly beans, but am also probably too lazy to make them ;)

  • After yesterday's butt germ discussion, I can't use a towel now without thinking about butt germs.

I'm guessing they will be willing participants in the spoiling.  According to my parents, my two older cousins were just as happy to spoil me as everyone else :P

I don't have any older brothers, though; my brother is younger.

Sounds like she's getting used to you being home!

  • I was (am?) spoiled in my family -- on my mom's side -- because I was the oldest grandchild.  So every milestone was a big deal.  When my younger brother and cousins hit those same milestone's, it was probably slightly less of a big deal.
  • Dilly beans are really easy.  This recipe is for (I think) 6 jars.

Pack 4 pounds of green beans lengthwise into jars, leaving 1/4 in head space (room a the top).  To each jar, add: 1/4 tsp. pepper, 1 clove garlic, 1 head of dill (need a head of dill?  I have them for probably another 2 weeks).

Bring to boil: 5 cups water, 5 cups vinegar, 1/2 cup salt

After boiling, distribute evenly in jars.  Seal jars.

If you're not going to eat them quickly or give them away, you can seal them by putting the jars in boiling water w/ 2 " water above the top of the jars for 5 minutes.  But canning scares me, so I make them just a jar or 2 at a time, or give them away to friends.

Yeah... that thought crossed my mind when I caught sight of our bath towels at one point last night too.  I fear I will never think of towels the same way again!

    Me too.  On both sides.

And I think of butt germs too, and giggle.

  • GRSP, I'm surprised to read that canning scares you.  Of all people, I would have thought that you'd be a canning pro.

    Thanks! That does sound easy.

I can jam and I feel tense the whole time I am doing it. That is until I start hearing the pop of the lids.

I recently heard something about Paula Deen's kids knowing about pork bacteria at a young age.  I think I could say "botulism" when I was six, and had an eye for dents in cans of fruits and veggies at the grocery store.  Despite the fact that she was a canning priestess, my mom has scared me away from the process.

  • You're all welcome for the butt germs.
