Book Club - Book Thief - Updated with Poll

We need someone to volunteer to lead the discussion for this book. Anyone interested?

Also - as mentioned in B&M, we are still waiting for AMC to post movie times to see the Help on Saturday - I have been checking daily and will post them as soon as I see them.

ETA: Poll. Also, if you choose restaurant options, please think of a place and post it in the comments. I am assuming everyone still wants to do book before movie.

Re: Book Club - Book Thief - Updated with Poll

  • I vote you.  :)

I finally finished this weekend.  My book has discussion questions in the back.  But I was reading them and realized I was going to have to really think about them.  I thought they were hard.  So I'm not sure I'm the best person to lead but I will if no one else wants to.

  • I can't start the book until later today so hopefully, I can read enough to contribute.

    Leslie,

For some reason, the Harkins (in Southlake) and Grapevine Mills don't post their weekend times until Thursday.

  • PS:  If it makes any difference, the Tinseltown in Grapevine has one at 11:55 AM and 3:25 PM.  It's 2 hrs. 17 min. long.  Just an FYI.

P.S.S. The Tinseltown in Grapevine is only $6/ticket.  The theatre is old, but who cares... DH and I used to go there ALL the time.

I'm not attending though...so my opinion doesn't count.  Just thought I'd throw in that little tidbit.

I think we are trying to go to a theater where you can eat lunch while seeing the movie. Does Tinseltown offer this?

It has a snack bar, I think...but no, not really.

  • I thought that the only reason the Mills was brought up was because we've met in that area so often.

How long do the book discussions usually last?

Usually we eat/talk for an hour then talk about the book for an additional 1.5 then talk again for another half hour or so. This one will be different since we aren't eating, so maybe an hour to an hour and a half?

I think the AMC at Grapevine Mills was brought up because we will be together from approx. 10am-2pm without eating lunch, so it was a good alternative to our normal potluck. There is also a Starbucks within half a mile from the theater, so it was a convenient place to meet and discuss the book. If I am wrong and others don't want to eat lunch, then it's whatever - we can go to any theater.

  • My only thought was that we could eat during the book discussion like you guys normally do.  I don't care one way or the other.
  • Just my 2 cents...Since no one that will be attending the Book Club chose this book, maybe we should do a group discussion.  Like everyone come prepared to talk about the part of the book that made the biggest impression on them, who their fave character was or what they didn't like about the book. That person can state their case and we can all comment/move the discussion along.

Where? What time? Also, where would we see the movie? We voted last week and the majority wanted to do book club first and then the movie. The majority also wanted to keep the whole thing at approx. the same time. With that we would be meeting at around 10 or 10:30 to discuss the book and then going to the movie around noon to have it finished by our normal end time of 2pm, all up in the air right now depending upon what time the movie is showing. It just seemed eating during the movie made more sense as the discussion wasn't going to be at any normal meal time.

Is the AMC Mills really expensive or something? This isn't my month to plan book club so it doesn't matter to me what we do. I am just trying to help out to get the plan together since our original plan fell apart.

I like this too. With a back-up plan of Stephie's book questions in case we get stuck? Unlikely with our chatty group, but a plan B is always good, right? :)

  • I definitely want to include lunch in the festivities - although I don't care if we eat & talk, or eat & watch, or eat & chat & watch/talk separately.  I just like food haha :)

I'm not really familiar with anything in the area, so I can't give an opinion either way - just tell me where to be and when!

    Sounds good to me!

Me too. Low calorie breakfast means starving Leslie by 1pm. Also, I wouldn't mind having a drink or two with my movie/meal - so if we go to AMC, I will be doing that too. Big Smile

  • I think tickets at the AMC are $12.
  • I haven't joined the book club before since I was/am still in LA. Before I go get the book, when will we be having the discussion/meeting?

FYI: We are moving Labor Day weekend

That is what we aim for.  July we missed it because of everyone's schedule.  At the end of the meeting, we discuss which book to do next (bring your ideas) and then we do a poll on the boards for which date works best for everyone.

Sounds fun! Is it always fiction?

No, not necessarily.  We discussed doing fiction one month and then non-fiction the next but it just happened that we had two fiction books in a row.  We are pretty laid back.

  • Since I won't be at the gtg here are my suggestions:

    -Animal, Vegetable, Miracle (Barbara Kingsolver)

-Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living (Pema Chodron)

    -The Holy Man (Susan Trott)

Can you tell I'm trying to read more nonfiction? hehehe

  • Here's my suggestion. Take it or leave it.

We do book club at the Starbucks down the street from Grapevine Mills mall around 10ish. Keep it shortish and then around lunch time we head to the mall and once inside we can eat at the food court. Plenty of options this way everyone can choice what they want (healthy or not so much). As a warning though, the mall will be crowded since it's a Saturday and it's getting close to school. After we all eat we'll go to the movie.

    Bam.

Obviously, all this will need to be planned around the movie time. If we manage to pick a movie that starts before noon tickets are $5. If we do the dine-in movie (where we pay for the ticket and then also for the food) tickets are $12.

    So, the day looks like:

10:00ish - Book Club at Starbucks

11:30 / Noonish - Head to and eat at the mall

    Noon thirtyish / 1ish - movie

    Yes? No?

  • Isn't this weekend also tax-free weekend?  Not sure if that factors in or not.

  • imagestephiehall:

Tax free weekend at the mall sounds miserable....

    No, it is the 19th-21st.

  • Since we have so many options going on, I put a poll in. Majority vote takes it.

Next time someone backs out on book club someone else needs to take up planning. This is making me have tired head. :)
