I've been going to Celebration on the Grand since the days of the Meijer Food Fair. (Oh how I miss those bags of free food...)

Anyway, the COTG fireworks show is always the best in Grand Rapids. Better than 4th of July. In case the newbies were wondering.

    Yes

ahhh..the meijer Food Fair....what a freak show that was..  ha ha.  My friend and I went once and were total amazement over people and their "excitement' over free tubes of ugly color lipstick and a package of two crackers and coupons that expired in two weeks.

  • GRSP, I remember her.  I was actually thinking of her and her husband when first contemplating this surf thing.  I don't think I'm brave enough to surf in the cool Lake Michigan waters though.  Although, perhaps if I love it in Hawaii, I might try to connect with them.
  • So, on the topic of sports, my family are huge sports fans.  HUGE.  Growing up, I was ignored when the Bad Boys (speaking or Rodman!) were in the playoffs and on TV (okay, maybe not ignored...).  Thanksgiving dinner is always squeezed into halftime of the Lions game.  My grandma has been known to forego family board games, in order to watch a good football game on New Years Day.  My mother is a bigger Tigers fan than most anyone else I know.  This season is kind of hard though because my grandpa (who is possibly the biggest sports fan ever and inducted into the local sports hall of fame) is not here to enjoy it for the first time.

Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that sports has been a big part of my life since I was born (when my mom was in labor with me, my dad left -- with my mom's permission -- to play a softball game).  Even though I'm not a huge sports fan myself, I get how a lot of people are.  It's good fun!

    Indifferent  Surprise and hilarious.

What was your grandpa inducted into the local HOF for?

Hehe, I know!  They still joke about it.  My grandma filled in for a little while.  It was very early labor.

Anyway, my grandpa was very involved in the lcoal sports scene all his life.  He lettered in something like four sports in high school, and was particularly good at basketball (he got a basketball scholarship to CMU).  As an adult, he coached baseball and softball teams for decades, leading some to state championships.  And then, up until he got sick, he could always be found along the fence that the high school football games, in the front row at basketball games, or in the stands at the hockey games.  And sitting in his car in left field, watching baseball games (any age would do!).  (This was particularly fun when any of his grandchildren -- such as myself -- played left field.)

Oh! I love this. I bet it was more fun for him when you were in the field, as well.

  • My family is really into sports too.  Dad had season tickets for U of M football for 30 years.  I know the kind of lonely feeling of being less into sports than the rest of the family.

We're probably going to the fireworks for Celebration tomorrow night.  My kids are good with rolling with different bedtimes.  We'll see how it goes tomorrow, though.  This week has been tiring.
