Dr. Brown not guilty

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8360994

I'm a little surprised actually.  Last night DH and I were watching the news (he didn't know a thing about this trial) and asked me "so he's on trial for twisting his wife's arm?"

Re: Dr. Brown not guilty

  • Twisting her arm and twisting her arm behind her back are very different IMO.

But at the same time it looks like there was questionable behavior on both sides.  She could have been an opportunist looking for a way to exploit his prior act of beating his first wife with a bed post.

And yet he is a man who has beaten his former wife with a bed post and chased this wife until he got her in a position where her arm was behind her back.

All sketchy. And... then there is the hiring of *** Deguerin.  If I am ever guilty of letting crazymichelle run loose I'll be sure to hire him too.

  • I agree about both of them being sketchy. I was more interested that the wife was having an affair with Jeff Bagwell.
  • this was an act of violence that was witnessed by a child and broken up by a bodyguard. he has a documented history of violence, and no matter what either of them may have done outside of their marriage, there should have been some sort of punishment.

  • Brown is a sleaze and a wife beater, druggie and probably a psycho.  I'm simply amazed that women keep marrying him.

Deguerin's a damn good defense attorney.

Agreed.  Deguerin is a fantastic attorney.  Everyone on the defense team worked really hard on this case and did a great job for their client.

I was totally disinterested in the entire thing and knew zero details until I saw Bagwell's name in a headline on MSNBC.

Doing the best damn job you can for your client does not make you sleazy.  It makes you good at your job.

  • I know we have a lot of attorneys on this board, and some may either know Deguerin or actually work for him.  He is clearly one of the best defense attorneys in Houston, if not the best.  He is smart, a dedicated attorney, and someone future attorneys could learn from in terms of law practice.

But I doubt Melissa was basing her comment on one case.  He has a tendency to represent high profile sleezeballs.  Sure it brings in money, but after a while the reputation of the clients you represent rubs off on your own.  Melissa isn't the first and won't be the last to express that opinion of him.  That coupled with my experience in school with his daughter is why I said both she and Suzi were right.

Wow.  I don't even know where to start with that one.  Offensive doesn't even begin to describe it.

I do all criminal defense and I would like to think I have a pretty decent reputation despite what my clients are charged with.
The allegations against them in no way reflect who I am as a person.

Not every person that is charged with a crime is guilty.  And even the guilty ones have a right to a fair trial and a proper defense.

No one said they weren't entitled to a fair trial and proper defense.  And of course there are plenty of innocent people.

But it cannot be a surprise that there is that sentiment 'out there.'  I mean, where would all the lawyer jokes come from?

I work in HR.  There are plenty of people who think HR professionals are anti-employee/pro-big business.  Do I think that is accurate?  Not at all.  Do I recognize there is that perception by a lot of people either because of other HR Manager's practices, Dilbert comic strips, misunderstanding of the field? Of course.  I don't take it personally.  You shouldn't either.

     Mrs.MGR here....

Thank goodness there are lawyers out there like kjr and Deguerin that defend the presumption of innocent until PROVEN guilty or the media would be the triers of fact. :::shudder:::

  • It's not a surprise.  But it is offensive and, in my opinion, ignorant.

I honestly don't care if you are offended by Dilbert comic strips or not.  And, yes, I do take it personally when someone suggests that my reputation is somehow damaged by the work I do.  It's sad when people make blanket statements like that about something they likely have limited knowledge of.

And in spite of Deguerin's excellent skills as an attorney, many of his clients have been, in fact, guilty (as judged in the court of law, not just the media).  As for Brown specifically - doesn't he have prior convictions?  Either way I already posted there seemed to be sketchy behavior from both sides (him and his wife).

Notable cases and clients of Deguerin (c&p from wikipedia because I'm lazy):

Some guilty, some not guilty.  In the court of public opinion, the Koreshes, Dursts, etc. stick out in one's mind.  Deguerin is not bothered by this and has even publicly interviewed that when he saw the Koresh drama he thought, "He needs me" because he is willing to represent those who have the world against them.  There wouldn't be the cliche of "court of public opinion" if it wasn't common and to pretend it doesn't exist is foolish.  So with that comes the necessity of thick skin and letting people have their opinions.

Your point?!?!? OMG....  It is the JOB of a criminal defense attorney to provide their client with a FAIR TRIAL, guilty or not. It doesn't matter. That means that, no matter what, a criminal defense attorney WILL represent criminals. Not only is it a criminal defense attorney's responsibility to provide their client with a fair trial, it is every U.S. citizen's Constutionally mandated RIGHT. It does not matter what they did, what their reputation is, how much money they have, or who is accusing them.... If lawyers like Deguerin did not stand up for them, they would NOT get a fair trial and justice would not be done.
