Re: Hump day randoms
Thanks. I talked to one of my classmates who was married before about what's been going on and got some good insight for things that I can change to hopefully improve things. I also haven't ruled out seeing one of the school counselors particularly for help managing the two pieces of my life.
A lot of reasons.
First for lying - they've said all along that business is going fine, they're surviving, etc., and now suddenly it's not viable and they pull this crap.
There's been a lot of mismanaging...buying into an online system (MLive) that doesn't work and that people hate but that they can't do anything to change because they paid for the template. And then focusing their efforts on that flawed system instead of paying attention to the printing/production... Also mismanaging employees doesn't help - everyone there is working in fear of their job getting cut because no one knows what is going on or they won't be straight with the employees. Doesn't exactly help morale to make a great product that will help business...
And especially for this new system that will see me paying the same amount of money to get three papers instead of seven. If I want seven, I have to actually pay more. And drive somewhere to get them so that I can pay more. "It's all about you, the customer" is crap.
There's a lot more swirling around in my brain but it's been meeting after meeting for me here today at work, so I haven't had a lot of time to formulate cohesive thoughts or investigate the situation more.
No confusion, I was just messin' with you. For funsies.
That might not be a bad idea. I know you're juggling a lot right now. And your situation is probably fairly unique compared to most of your classmates. You're married and you're living away from your husband. Stressful!
Jim used to be a circulation manager there, and has a few friends who have stayed at the Press this long. We're pretty aware of the behind the scenes stuff, too. Particularly the morale problem.
I know that a newspaper is an institution in a community. There have been missteps along the way, but every business is seeing changes that doesn't necessarily have the client at priority #1.
What's weird is that I haven't given much thought at all to my marriage and the distance since September--I'm completely focused on school during the week. That's where I think the problems have arisen--when I come home on the weekends I have blinders on and am completely focused on what's going on with me. Based on some things that have transpired over my last couple of weekends home, I *think* that L might be going through a lot that he hasn't communicated about and I've been too concerned with my own workload to even notice.
DP, you know I fully support the counselor idea.
Just talking to someone might help you realize that you already have a tool or two that you haven't been using.
Thanks. I think the hardest part about it is feeling like I don't have the time to see someone. I also wonder what (if any) implications there might be professionally. I know doctors, for example, can have a hard time getting med mal insurance based on counseling history.
The free coffee at the dean of students office is doing its job, though, I know where to go when/if I need to get the information to set up an appointment
Wow, how sad and awful.
Is there an attorney association # you can call to ask about implications?
I don't know how doctors would be impacted. Ethically, counselors are not allowed to release information about clients.
If you need to, you should be able to go to the counselor anon. to talk.
Really? I didn't know about this.
I'd be really surprised if the Bar cares about counseling history. I have no idea, though, so don't take my word for it.
The dean of students office will be able to help me out with that, but I'm reasonably sure it won't be an issue. Finding the time is much more significant.
I'm basing my info about doctors on something one of my doctor friend's said once. I think they can find out based on medical records/insurance claims and it more has to do with a dx for depression and/or taking anti-depressant meds. The underlying idea seems to be if you can't handle your own situation, how will you be able to effectively manage your professional responsibilities?
You're probably right. It is crazy what they'll allow. My Ohio friend had a classmate who wasn't allowed to take the bar exam for a few years because of a major drug problem--cocaine I think.
It also looks like some of my classmates are showing beginning signs of alcoholism. It's pretty clear that a lot of the problems that some professionals have start in school.
Whoever made that up is an idiot.
Let's punish the doctors who want to seek out help for their issues to get them under control, and scare the doctors who truly need help out of getting the help the need. SO DUMB.
I totally agree with both of you. I think it shows so much self-awareness to be able to seek help than to deal with problems ineffective (and often unsuccessful ways).
I have a headache, and it's because it's so damn hot in my office. Boo.
I surprised Nick with Qdoba for lunch. He was happy :-)
D&M- sorry you have to call daycares. We got lucky and a friend of ours had an opening, and we were able to hold the spot with her. It has to be hard cold calling people you don't know to watch your child. Such a hard decision. I hope you find a good one!
Diana- I hope things get better with school
I skimmed...what else did I miss?
My confession: I don't remember the last time I bought a newspaper to read. *shrug* I read most of my news online or catch it on tv. I do enjoy receiving the free Advance paper with quick updates on what's going on in Wyoming though.
That list is ridiculous.
I own like 1. And a half. Or something.
Ha! Me too!
Yeah seriously, it's really hard. It's hard enough to find a damn daycare that has any openings at all. Once I find one, then I have to make sure they don't have any animals, aren't too expensive, and have a back-up plan for when they are closed...and if they make it past that round, then I actually have to find out if I like them and trust them with my child, have a clean home, etc.
Ugh. Ugh. UGH.
After many, many, many tests, today is meet with the oncologist day for my uncle. I think it's prognosis day, and also go over treatment plan day.
They finally found out what kind of cance it is. Pancreatic. At first when I heard this, I had a mini panic attack. I've always heard that pancreatic means bad news. That's true for about 95% of pancreatic cancer (The kind that Patrick Swayze had). Thank God my uncle has the kind that makes up the other 5%. (The kind that Steve Jobs had.)
It's a slower growing, more treatable cancer.
Unfortunately for my uncle, it spread to his liver and bones before caught it.
Hopefully, after the millions of tests over the past few weeks, the appointment today will be very informative. I'm just not-so-patiently waiting to hear from my uncle. The appointment started an hour ago...
I hope the prognosis is good for him.
I lost my grandma to pancreatic cancer 15 years ago. She made the decision not to get treatment, and died within a year of diagnosis. It was really hard for our family to understand why she didn't want treatment, but because she waited so long to get herself checked out, even with treatment she would have only lived for a few extra months. I'm tearing up even while typing this. I miss her a lot.
I own 4 or 5 depending on how exactly we're counting, and possibly up to 7 (I have a favorite and most expensive pair of shoes but I wouldn't necessarily call them "out of this world"). I also have two pairs of non-suede booties.
So I also need to go shoe shopping. See also: Desire to go on a crazy shopping spree. I've been deleting every email from Endless.
Wop, school's fine. My marriage is what hopefully gets better
Ha! Reading comprehension fail!
Three for me! Boots, flats, canvas sneaks. And lots and LOTS of running shoes and others not mentioned on The List.
My Clean Eating Blog
Green Living Reading List
Seven!
Some sort of athletic shoe should be on this list.
