Ugh.  That's what I was afraid of.

I almost passed out from the pain of having it inserted.  I gave birth drug-free, for point of reference.

I don't have that to compare it to ;)  But the insertion really wasn't that painful for me, ironically.  It was uncomfortable, but more just from the cramping (she gave me an rx ahead of time to soften my cervix?) That night wasn't bad, but the next morning... BAM PAIN.

The removal hurt like a *** though. (The strings had curled up completely, so she had a hard time 'finding it'.)

The permanent BC options kind of scare me a bit.

    IUDs aren't permanent.

Good lord, Steph.  That just sounds lovely.  Well so far my mom is the only person I know who has had a good experience with it.  This does not make me optimistic.

I've had my Mirena for about 3 years now. Yes, the periods and cramps were bad for about the first 6 months, like Chelsea said. But they tell you that, so I was completely expecting it. Since then, my period is nothing and I never have cramps. I also don't have to worry about taking BCP (I have a notoriously bad memory), using condoms or getting accidentally pregnant like I were charting or something (I do not have the memory to do charting - god bless you girls who do!).

I know some people have a bad experience with it, but like (I think) chirpchirp said, hormones are hard to work with, in my opinion. It's kind of a hit or miss. But you can always have it removed it you need to - which I am not looking forward to, because I have heard it's a little uncomfortable. So there you have it :)

Oops, permanent was the wrong word. You leave an IUD or Mirena in for as long you want though right? That still scares me.

The Mirena IUD can be left in up to 5 years; the copper up to 7? 10? I can't remember.

  • The copper is 10 (although I plan on having out before then when we want to TTC like 3-5 years).
