Birth Story for those interested :) PIPs too

I liked reading them when I was pregnant so I thought I would post it here as well as my birth board :)

Last week I had a "feeling" something was going to happen and actually rescheduled everything that I had scheduled for this week (hair appt, my hospital pre admit appt, etc). I kept saying she would come on the 10th because of the new moon. DH thought I was nuts, just like he did when I told him as soon as I found out I was pregnant that we were having a girl, lol.

So on Friday I felt a little "off", my stomach was a little funny all day. We went to my moms for dinner and I ate pretty light just in case. Afterwards I wanted to go to Target and walk around and get some last minute Christmas items (cards, etc).

We get home from Target and I decide to change our sheets and put puppy pads under my side of the bedsheets. DH is watching TV and I am playing around on the laptop. All of a sudden, I feel a small gush. I jump up and run to the bathroom and find my pj pants are wet. I yell to DH that I think my water broke and I hear him running and tripping to the bathroom (this was one of my favorite parts, he was so excited and cute). We are trying to figure out if it is in fact my water or if I peed my pants and after about 10 minutes its pretty apparent that it was my water. I stuff a puppy pad into some yoga pants, pack up the rest of our stuff, and off to L&D we go.

We checked in to L&D at 1215am on Saturday and sat in triage until about 2:30 when they finally moved me to my room and started Pitocin immediately as I was not contracting at all and my cervix was the same as it had been for two weeks (2.5-3 cm and 70% effaced, baby was still high at -3 station), and I had a low grade fever upon admission. Between knowing that I was "on the clock"  and the fact that none of the Drs from my practice were on call (once a month a Dr from another practice is the one on call), I was prepared for the worst and had a little bit of a meltdown. I called my mom and friend Traci and they both arrived within the hour, prepared for a long day.

I didn't start feeling any contractions until around 4:30 am, about 2 hours after starting the Pit and I was really sick to my stomach for the early part of labor and spent most of the time in the bathroom. It was miserable. I asked for the epi around 615 and by 630 the anesthesiologist was in the room. He was a COMPLETEDICK. As he was placing the epi, I felt a zinger down the right side of my back and flinched. He yelled at me and hit the same place again and I flinched again. He threw down his supplies, said "Im not dealing with this" and told me I could find someone else to do the epi if I wanted but he wasnt going to do it. He told me that the reason why I could feel it was because I was "too big" for the numbing shot to work. Um, ok. Im overweight but its not like I am *that* huge! At this point the nurse checked me and I was only at a 3.5.

At this point I was completely deflated, hysterical crying and in pain because I thought I wasnt going to be able to get an epi and I was nowhere near prepared for a pitocin fueled natural childbirth. The nurse was pushing me to take narcotics which I DID NOT want. I was firm about this (which I am happy about) and decided I would wait the 30 min for shift change and try again for the epi with the new Dr on call.

8:00 am rolled around, I have a new nurse who was an absolute angel and a new anesthesiologist who placed a perfectly painless epi.  I was in heaven for about 30 minutes and started to have to breathe through my contractions again. The nurse noticed around 9am and decided to check me. Um, yeah. I went from 3.5 to 9.5 cm in less than an hour. I was in complete shock. The on call doc came in and checked me himself around 930 and told me I had a little lip left and to lie on my left side to get rid of it. By the next contraction I was feeling pushy and sure enough I was 10 cm!

Pushing is a bit of a blur to me, it was super intense and I definitely went somewhere inside myself that I didnt know existed- lol. My mom and DH were great coaches as well as Traci who was there photographing the birth as well as supporting me.

Finally at 10:51, Elizabeth Louise was born! She had a little of a rough start and we werent able to do any skin to skin immediately. The cord was wrapped around her neck and her first apgar was a 5. They took her away to work on her and then the Dr was working on me for quite some time, I ended up with a 2nd degree tear and lost some extra blood (DH later told me he was a little scared).

I can't describe the moment when they brought her back to me though, she was so beautiful. I can't wait to see all of the photographs from her birth as most of it was a whirlwind. I got a few "sneak peeks" including this one of DH as he saw his daughter for the first time (I cant even look at this picture without turning into a sobbing mess)

I can't believe how quick my labor was- really only 6 hours from when contractions started. I am convinced my chiropractic care in the last few weeks largely contributed to this. Recovery is pretty much what I expected, I am sore but blissfully happy so it really doesnt matter :)

My nurses have all been wonderful which makes things so much easier as they are teaching us a lot. We are having a little bit of a rough time with feeding as Lizzie is tongue tied and needs her frenulum clipped (will happen tomorrow with the pedi). She also had low sugars when she was born so has been supplemented with formula. Hopefully our nursing routine will established this week but for now we are bfing/pumping/supplementing.

Here is one more pic of me with Lizzie :)
