If you wanted a weekend home

The only thing it has to have is a boat lift or ability to add a dock/lift.  Any other ideas of areas to look that would satisfy this need?

Re: If you wanted a weekend home

  • My gut would say Lake Conroe because I'm a fresh water person/don't want to worry about hurricanes.

But, if we continue to have drought conditions and Conroe continues to remain low and be drained for Houston water supply... it would be pretty miserable to have a lake house where you couldn't get your boat to your house.

I know eventually, it will come back up to level but its SOOO low right now, I just wonder how long its going to take.

  • I was thinking that I would want a weekend home as far away from my regular home as possible (within an hour or so drive),  30 minutes seems too close to go through the trouble of a second home, IMHO.

    Ditto.

  • I'm not a lake girl so I vote for 45 minutes on the bay.  We have a hurricane once every 10/20 years.  I can deal with that.

If it's truly for weekends, I'd also not want to drive forever to get there.

Ditto this.  I prefer lakes.  Also when a hurricane is coming, instead of worrying about your weekend home, you could evacuate to it.

    This ew.

  • Have you looked into Lake Livingston?  Otherwise, I would pick Conroe.
  • Does your Husband like to fish? I ask because if we did not live close to the water and were looking at a weekend home it would def. be a house on the bay. K loves to fish but he only fishes salt water.

I totally agree with this....not a fan of lakes for that reason.

Agree. My mom had a house of Lake Livingston and is looking to move back up there again soon. We loved it up there because on holiday weekends it wasn't crazy like Conroe was. Also, I drive up 45 everyday..try driving it on Friday especially on a Friday afternoon during the summer or a holiday weekend!

  • My family has a home on the Trinity River, very close to Lake Livingston. It's so nice and peaceful out there and still within a 60 minute drive time.
  • i'm torn between galveston and lake conroe.  i'd pick galveston, except that on some weekends, traffic to the island is a joke (especially if there's an air show or it's a popular beach weekend).

for me, a weekend home needs to be somewhere serene.

Ditto. I do not see the point. I would add prefer if I had a few extra days off added to my weekend to have a place in Destin or Orange Beach. They are within 7 hours or so and so much nicer.

  • another vote for Lake Livingston
  • I vote Lake Conroe for numerous reasons:

-Boat maintenance is a lot more tedious in brackish or saltwater
-I also feel like the water is cleaner in Lake Conroe than in Galveston Bay.  The San Jacinto has a pretty strong current, and I always see trash washed up on Galveston beaches when I go down there.  At least the river carries it past you instead of TO you.
-An hour drive from Houston to Lake Conroe is no sweat.  I did it for years when I lived at home; my parents do it nearly every weekend now.

The drought has majorly sucked, however I did hear that the lake was up 5" from the rain earlier this week.  Just need another 9ft, right? :)

And the PP who said you could evacuate to it is right on; it's pretty handy to have a house so far inland.

  • have you thought about Port A?
  • I would pick a canal home on Tiki Island or Bayou Vista... with no living space downstairs that I'd have to worry about if a hurricane came through. Bonus: You get to skip the island traffic (but close enough if you wanted to visit/participate in anything going on, which is a lot and it's growing all the time).

you don't really get to skip the "island traffic" if you're driving there from downtown houston.  we live off bay area, and on weekends in the summer, 45 is a mess heading to the island (esp. on friday afternoons and saturday mornings) right there between BW8 and 518.

but yes, tiki island!  i love tiki island.

It is a lot cheaper there, but the amenities are not as good (pool!)

This is such a big and silly decision at the same time!

  • Our eventual plan is to live on the water, and we would want to live on the bay so we could have a boat. There are places that fit this bill in Kemah/Seabrook and in Galveston.

I personally would not want to live on a man-made canal or on a river. Similar to you, lake & river water skeeve me out, and a man-made canal is just not "real" enough for me...I'd prefer to have a real, long-rangel "water/ocean view". But that's just my opinion.

Though I really like a lot of homes on the West End of Galveston, I think I'd enjoy Tiki Island enough (and it IS a lot closer to Houston-proper than deep into Galveston, at least 15-20 minutes closer).

    One of these days....

  • My parents owned a bay house on the bay side, they were way out the west end, past Sea Isle. Once you got out there it was pretty quiet, although it was a looooong drive. But my vote is for Galveston in general.

I work in Galveston half the time and the drive isn't always so bad, although I usually go out highway 6 because it's easier for me.

This house is awesome!!! Love the garage door type windows. My only reservations is the 2 bathrooms.  I assume you'd probably have company and with swimming, showers and people just needing to go I don't think 2 is enough. I imagine it would also be an expensive a/c bill with all of that glass, high ceilings and over 3,000 sq ft.

  • amydrinkie is the only one that mentioned out number one consideration which is time spent on boat maintenance. you have to thoroughly clean a boat after salt water excursions if you are properly caring for it and that is exhausting for relaxing weekends away. i like lake livingston better than conroe because of the drive/traffic/crowds. but lakes in tx arent my favorite anyway because of claybottoms. the lake i grew up on is in truth or consequences NM and has a sandy bottom like the beach but no itchy salt water. i think if you are into salt water and dont want a lot of maintenance, a place in clear lake, kemah, or seabrooke where there are marinas with people who will wash your boat for you are wise considerations.

You're right, Jax, you still have to deal with BW8-518 traffic. But you won't have to deal with the causeway when there are accidents, or 61st street (and the 61st street exit) in the summers, which is a nightmare!

  • Now you got me looking LOL and I'm in love with this one: http://search.har.com/engine/930-Bonita-St-Bayou-Vista-TX-77563_HAR42383246.htm (and I could only look in the lower price ranges, this being tops of what we could maybe afford :) ) We work in Galveston so this isn't for a weekend home, it would be for a full time home. Ahhhhh to dream...

Our boat is in a marina in Clear Lake, but we clean it ourselves everytime.  It isn't a big deal, takes maybe 15 minutes or so.

If you got something on the west end though it's a fairly traffic free easy drive down 288 ;-)

  • I voted for the lake.  For some reason the big open ocean freaks me out.  Maybe I watched Jaws one too many times as a kid.
