What size bed does your kid have?

We'll be buying a new bed for Tracey soon so the crib can get moved into the other room. A large part of me wants to go with at least a full to have extra guest space in addition to our guest room, but even with her fairly large room I worry about it eating up space.  I'm also considering getting a twin now and giving the twin to the newbie when he/she moves out of the crib and getting T a larger bed then.

I had a twin until I was in jr high and got a full.

What are people doing these days??

Re: What size bed does your kid have?

  • When we move into a permanent home we'll get G a full. Bedtime/nighttime is a nightmare for us. He fights going to bed and rarely stays in his bed all night. I think part of the problem is that he's a crazy sleeper and he rolls out of bed and wakes himself up. Plus it would be nice to have the extra space in the event we have guests.

  • Do you plan on her playing in her room, or do you have another play room?  I would probably do a twin and trundle, if you plan on her doing a lot of playing in her room as she gets older.  If you have a game room or play room, I would probably go with a full.  We have a game room and have a full size for my older ds and will probably get another full when my younger ds moves out of the crib.
  • She is still in her crib, but we have a twin for when she wants it.

  • DD#1 is in a full, has been since about 27 months.  DD#2 will stay in the crib as long as possible and then we'll convert her to a full... maybe bunk beds with big sis if they insist.
  • T has a full and it's been great. However, we are moving him to a twin when the boys go in to the same room. If we had an extra bedroom, he would be staying in the full for sure.

This what we plan on doing one day.

  • Luca has a twin race car bed. Lila is about to move into a twin with trundle. I'd love to put her in a full, but her room is too small.
  • I had a twin until I moved to college.

Our intention was to give DS a full, but I think we'll do a twin for the same reason you mention - it will give more space in the room.  Plus, my twin frame is in the attic so we'll just be buying a mattress.

  • A was in a Queen (because that's what was we already had) until we moved and then she got a full with a trundle.

C will likely move into the Queen that is already in his room when he's out of the crib and we will store the convertible crib and move it to a full bed if/when we ever get a house with an extra guest room.

  • Twin.

We have a guest room and I want her to have room to play comfortably in her room without feeling crowded.

If I had a concern over guest sleeping space I'd get a twin with a trundle that lifts up to form a king, and have one of those foam things to put over the top so it feels like one mattress under the fitted sheet and not two.

  • He's still in the crib, when he figures out how to climb out (which I don't know why he hasn't, he can climb IN...) we plan to buy him a twin.  I really hadn't considered putting a full in his room, it's small.  And we have a full in the guest room/office.  I am debating whether to put a twin with a trundle or a twin with storage under it... that's my dilemma.

  • the toddler bed conversion did not go well with dd, so she went straight to a full. we had the same thought process as you - extra space for guests if needed. this has come in handy now that our guest room is in the midst of becoming ds' room.

its come in handy for guests and makes it easier to lay down with her to read or calm her down with nightmares. when she had the flu last spring we alternated sleeping with her because her fever was so high.

  • We got ds a queen suite when he turned a year old. We see it as an investment which he'll have for years and then take with him when he leaves home.

  • The big boys are in twin race car beds.  G's bed has a trundle.

  • N has a twin right now. I'm sure when he's older we will get him a queen.

I had a queen at home through college but when i went to school (boarding) it was a twin and I had no problems.

  • We don't have an official play room or game room. All of her toys are downstairs floating around and I want to corral them into half of our front room (originally a formal living room, but now mostly an office) one of these days. I imagine when she gets a little older she will start playing more in her room.

Her room size is one of the nice things about this generation of houses. There were no game rooms, so the square footage stayed in the bedrooms! Her room is 14 x12.

I need to look into pop-up trundles because that would be a nicer sleep space for guests than a full.

  • C has a 100+ year old twin that will be his until he moves out and then passed down to him when he wants it for his future kiddo.
  • DD had a twin size till we bought a new bed 2 years ago.  I gave her my queen size.  Makes it great when she has several friends sleeping over.

  • DD got a full for Christmas, she is a crazy sleeper and would fall out of smaller beds so we figured this would give her more room and double as a guest bed with any of her cousins are here, it will last longer so she will have it for several years. It obviously takes up more space in her room but she has a separate game room so that wasn't an issue for us. The only time she's in her room for an extended amount of time is to sleep.

  • Addie has a twin and the boys will too when they move on to real beds. Their rooms are close to 11x11 so I don't see room for much more.

  • I had a twin my whole life - even took it to college (after the twin in the dorm).  It never occured to me to get anything bigger (aka - didn't have the money! lol).

DS has a full b/c we got the crib that converted.  I like that it's large enough for us to sit in it to read books with him, but it's also big enough for us to sleep in, which probably allows us to do so more than we should.  Embarrassed

DD will also have a full b/c we have the crib that converts.

I never had any matching furniture growing up - it was just a mish mash of stuff.  In fact, my bed frame was the trundle bed from my sister's bed, so I didn't even have a "real" bed frame.  We didn't have any furniture for DS or DD's room, so I took the opportunity to get nicer furniture set for them to keep forever (or at least until it's too beat up to use anymore!).  Therefore, our set included the convertible crib.

ETA:  If she has a fairly large room, the full doesn't really take up that much more space than a twin.  Try taping it off in masking tape on the floor to get a feel for the space each will take.

Whenever we have guests, I don't necessarily think to kick DS out of his room, though, if that is your sole reason.  I would rather him go to bed at normal time and not disturb him - so think about that, too.

  • We'll only need her room as an extra guest room if we have my parents and b/SIL or my parents and his dad, so it wouldn't happen much and I guess she'd just bunk with her sibling in that case. I pulled the tape measure out today and played around. I think a full wouldn't be too bad.

As for buying her a matching queen set--we don't even have one yet!! :)

  • We don't have a bed in the spare room so DD's room is where guests sleep and she sleeps on the couch or an air mattress in the living room.

  • Both of my kids have twins.
  • She has a full, as that's what her crib was intended to convert to. We also purchased 1 nice set of matching furniture for her (bed, dresser/hutch combo) so that it would grow with her & last throughout her formative years. So far it seems to be holding up nicely!

  • Ya'll fancy. I had a twin bed till I was like 20.

Growing up only my spoiled friends with Barbie dream houses had full beds.Geeked
