Prop 8

Re: Prop 8

  • This will probably be the last time I reply. My brain is starting to hurt. So much for your debate...

In response to everyone... I don't have a LEGAL reason why it should be ok or not ok. I'm just telling you, that I'm against it and why I'm against it.

My conscience would never allow me to say this is ok based on what I believe. If I go against my conscience, I go against my faith. And I can't do that.

True, there are many interpretations of the Bible. My upbringing, my personal beliefs and my convictions tell me this is wrong and so I can never support it.

dbucks: I understand your point, but my question is, how can you support something that you personally don't think is right? I don't think this is right, so I will never support it. This is what democracy is all about... Voting based on what you believe and think.

I hope there is at least one other person out there that will contribute and keep the debate alive. I learned awhile ago that you can't make people think the way you think no matter how much you talk and debate, (Not that I'm trying to win you all over to my side) so I don't feel like debating any longer. I've said my two cents and I'm done for now. Bye for now! Have fun debating!

I wouldn't do that if I were you...

  • I don't see how anyone can think that people should have the right to marry the opposite sex for five seconds, have an affair, or just decide "they dont want to be married anymore" but that people shouldn't have the right to marry a person they have been committed to for 10+ years just because they have the same anatomy.

And FTR I don't really support homosexuality, but I do support gay marriage.

  • As usual, coming into the conversation late (shakes fist at West coast time zone).  As someone who very proudly voted No when this prop was on the ballot, I am thrilled with the court's decision. My big issue with the proposition was putting a civil right to the vote of the public.

Like Mary, I don't think the SC will take this, since it's decision would be so limited thanks to the way it's worded. Which could mean that WA and CA are now in a race to see who will be the 7th state (thats right, WA is currently in the process of writing it into legislation, just got the last Yes vote a few weeks ago, woohoo!).

I will just add, this prop only passed with 51 to 49, which means although technically the majority it barely passed. There was a lot of support for gay marriage, and that was 4 years ago. Support in favor of gay marriage has definitely grown since then.

And, just for controversy's sake, I can spin this whole "how can you support something you don't believe in" discussion in a new way.  I don't believe in God or the Bible as a factual book. But, I would never support a rule that made believing in or practicing either illegal. Just because I don't believe in it, doesn't mean I can't understand why someone else would. If thats what they need in their life to feel complete, then hey, go for it. As long as it's not imposing on my own life and happiness.

    ETA to complete my thought

Yes, democracy is based on me voting for what I believe and think. And as I said, just because I think something is wrong, doesn't mean it is wrong. And until I'm granted the power to make that black and white distinction in life, I'm not going to vote for oppression. I'm going to vote for people to have the right to do what makes them happy, which is my interpretation of the Constitution, the only document or book that should matter in legal decisions.

Well said.  But the last sentence is what most important.  People who try to deny marriage for homosexuals ARE imposing on people's lives and happiness.  That's where it loses me.  Believe what you want, don't try to ruin other people's lives because of those beliefs.

Exactly!! Thats the (incomplete) point I was making, lol

  • So totally late to this and not sure exactly where my comment will fit in with the flow of the conversation (I've had a monster flu-like head cold since Sunday), but here goes:

I'm over the moon ecstatic about this. However I'm sure the Supreme Court will probably affirm with no comment. It'll be Yes for overturning something unconstitutional, however we reserve our judgement for a later date.

My personal beliefs: I feel I am the world's worst Catholic because I am a liberal. I am pro-choice. Personally, it would probably be the hardest decision for me to make if I ever was faced with the possibility of needing an abortion, but the more I research it, the more and more I lean towards a woman's uterus being separate from the law. I also do not think being gay is a sin. I know there are some sick and strange people out there (and maybe I'm naiive) but I could never EVER understand why someone would choose a lifestyle that could get them beaten and killed and they aren't even legally protected. It's not like being African American or disabled in the sense that the Nation finds discrimination against them illegal/hate crimes. Gay people don't have that, yet here they are.

And anecdotally (if that's even a word), I am close friends with several gay people.....and most of them are religious. Two of my closet friends are Catholic. Why in the blue bloody hell, would you CHOOSE that??? I'm of the firm belief that ones sexual orientation is genetically predetermined.

And as for my beliefs about the Bible: it's a historical (although not historically accurate) book. I believe it is the Word of God, however I also believe that man is fallible. Man also took the Word and wrote it down....and it's been written and translated and re-translated so.many.times that who knows what God was truly trying to convey? Remember that line in Pirates of the Caribbean? "The Code is more like....guidelines than actual rules." <----my view of the Bible

And I love it when people say that being gay is "an abomination." Read Leviticus please....right next to where it says a man lying with a man is an abomination, it also talks about other abominations: touching the skin of pig, planting 2 different seeds in the same field, eating hard shelled creatures of the sea, wearing garments of two different materials, a man sleeping in the same bed as his wife during her "unclean time." Even touching the bed the "unclean" wife has slept on without proper sacrifices is an abomination. How many of the people saying being gay is an abomination are having their husbands sacrifice two turtle doves each night after he touches (not even sexually, just a hug or a brush past) his wife while on her period?

If you look at that from a historical perspective, most of it Moses was just power hungry, but the rest were ways to keep the Hebrews alive, safe, and multiplying their ranks. When pork goes off, it isn't like beef where you can instantly tell it isn't safe to eat; so let's just avoid pigs altogether. STDs and other diseases spread through bodily fluid; no touching during the time your wife is bleeding. Man shall not lay with a man; sex is not for pleasure, it's for making more people ergo gay is not the way. This was also a way to distance themselves from the Roman pagans (who enjoyed and embraced sexuality, not made it a dirty thing to be hidden).

And in regards to Sodom & Gomorrah:  The cities were not destroyed because of Teh Gayz. God had decided long before his angels arrived there and were threatened with rape that he was going to destroy them. They were wicked in every sense of the word. The sin wasn't gay; the sin was rape. And they raped whatever they damn well pleased. They were also inhospitable to guests of the town, and during the times (read parts of how Jesus says to treat thy neighbor) being inhospitable was right up there with murder. God also gave S&G a chance to repent and they gave God the proverbial middle finger. THAT'S why God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.
