Just told my boss about the pregnancy

Re: Just told my boss about the pregnancy

  • Congrats and I'm sorry about your FIL.

I think that the legal profession is especially rough for females. I've watched several of my (female) bosses give up time with their young children because they want to "get ahead." I recently came to my own realization that their choices don't jibe with my priorities, and I quit for a place that I hope will be a better fit. Would you consider moving on after you have your child?

It's unfortunate that, as female attorneys (you are one, right?), or even as female employees overall, we have to make the choice between family and career. It is 2012 and all, but in many ways, it isn't.

  • I really hope D's dad is OK and you can see him soon.

That said, "diarrhea spores" has delayed lunch for at least an hour.

  • Diarrhea spores is the new fecal mist.

  • He's still got the d.spores.  F sho.  And I came in-house expecting a better work life balance, and, the last month aside, generally have that.  Lots of vacation time, little working on the weekends or evenings.  I think the company has a great attitude about how employees are treated.  Just not my boss apparently.

  • Your boss sucks. I hate her. Staffing levels are not your problem. I swear to god I'm waiting for Outlook to release a feature where people can find the optimum times for things like pregnancy, surgery, and family emergencies. The work-life balance in this country as a whole is ludicrous.

  • You're pregnant! I'm so happy! What a lucky baby!

  • First of all, congrats! Very exciting!

Your boss is an ahole, sorry! It's one thing for her to internally freak out about coverage but another to express it to you, out loud, at all. I don't care what type high pressure field you're in, her response is f'd up, imo.

  • C diff is no joke. Spores or not. Steer clear. Knowing what I know about hospitals, I'd say stay out of them at all costs. Seriously, they are no place for healthy people, unless, of course you're getting paid to be here.

  • Yeah, apparently female attorneys are not supposed to have a life.  I feel we've done it to ourselves, because so many other female lawyers barely have any time for their kids, and so the rest of us are expected to either a) never get pregnant or b) choose work over family all the time.

I am in-house and I had 2 kids. In addition, I quit both jobs and stayed home a year with each of my kids because work-life balance became an issue. I've been working full-time again for the past two years, but it never gets any easier, I'm afraid. You constantly have to show that you can be a good lawyer and a good mom.
