I think it's a great idea! I would totally tell my H about it. And boo on bumpies for chasing off fathers. The stereotype of the bumbling inattentive father is eroding. Time for the bump to catch up.

    I agree.

    I think it's a great idea.

If you build it, they will come.

  • I agree with PPs that as the site exists now, it wouldn't be used much. You'd have to change the color scheme, put flashy sh*t on the sidebar, and change the cute baby shop ad pics to something with sports in it. Upwards of 50% of men mentally convert most things that do not scream testosterone into circa 1993 Summer's Eve commercials. They will never patronize a web site that looks like a Summer's Eve commercial in any way that other men will ever see.

What a load of sexist crap. Seriously. Is that all you think men are?

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Just for fun, I asked my husband about this, and he said that if there was an active board, he would visit occasionally to ask a question or learn something new, but that he probably wouldn't visit daily for the purpose of building connections or community with other dads. He's more likely to participate actively on forums related to his hobbies, then chat about parenting with the dads he meets there.

I suspect with a lot of casual posters, like my H, the board would be less active and/or have a different feel from other Bump boards. But maybe that's not a bad thing, just different. I think it would be an interesting experiment at least.

I dunno Pixy, I was reading that and nodding my head lol. Obviously, thats not what all men are, but right or wrong, men are not usually drawn to pastel colors and pictures of flowers and babies. I have always thought this board is obviously designed for and to attract women, and thats fine. But if they were going to do a board for men, it would probably be wise to make it attractive to men in the first place.

If it wasn't for my wife going on here, I would never have joined.

  • I think the right answer in somewhere between the current layout and Mamasaurus's perception of what is appealing to men. A clean, gender neutral format is a good idea. But I don't think the site needs flashy graphics and sports crap to get mens' attention. That's just nonsense.

  • The Bump has a million boards. Srsly, there's one dedicated to pampers. Pampers!? There's no reason why there can't be one dedicated to dads. People need to stop acting as if all men come out central casting from a Spike TV TV show.

I didn't say all men were like that. I said at least half of them care enough about what other men think of them that they wouldn't patronize this site as it exists now. It isn't marketed to them; it is marketed to women. If I felt like a web site was trying to market only to men and had nothing to do with my life, I wouldn't use it, either. This is why I don't go on ESPN.com to follow hockey.

It may be sexist to say that men don't want to read the threads here about diva cups and what pads are best for PP bleeding on the bump, but it's also true. Very few men are so enthusiastic about women's bodies that they want to read about menses. Very few men want other men to perceive them as shopping for pink frilly diaper bags. I don't say that makes them all bad people, but TBH, I do think a lot of men using the site as it exists now (especially in the age ranges I see a lot) would end up with some threads lambasting some guy for appearing interested in something "gay" or "f*ggy" like on many other web sites...and then the guys who were here to learn, be better parents, or support their partners would go away. I mean, have you ever been on 4chan? It kind of proves my point.
