You know what I find oddly fascinating?

Preparing for an apocalypse.  I mean not the guns and ammunition/hunker down and shoot zombies kind of hoarding but the rations, water and every day living things.

I mean where do they keep this stuff...how long will a can of beans last before you die from eating them?

Re: You know what I find oddly fascinating?

  • What I find to be the most funny is the whole idea of them doing it all themselves instead of having to go to one Red Cross station or god forbid live in a FEMA trailer. Are you really gonna choose to live in your rotting house with no heat, AC, or electricity eating cold, expired ravioli or are you going to move to temporary housing where you can order a pizza and watch TV?

  • Have you seen this show?

I only watched one episode. It was half "WTF these people are insane" and half "Hmm, I'm very ill prepared for the impending apocalypse."

I think I'd rather be prepared with a generator and foodstuffs than rely on FEMA.  We live on a hill so a flood is unlikely, but we lost power for 9 days after Irene and made do

Didn't mean to quote myself, meant to edit, but this will do.

And we live on a well.  That was by far the worst part.  having a well and no electricity meant no water.  In the summer with 2 toddlers.

After a few days my H figured out that our neighbor is on city water so he was able to steal some from them somehow.  I don't understand the logistics of it, I was just happy for it

I haven't watched it because I am sure I will be exactly like this...exactly.

  • You can't rely on FEMA in a hurricane or tornado, yet you want to rely on them in an apocalypse?  When the vast majority of people are dead, injured, or otherwise not able to help?  Good luck!  Sorry, but in an apocalypse, it's every person for him/herself.

  • Is doomsday preppers the one where the guy took his kids out shootin and his gun misfired and he lost part of his thumb?

My H is fascinated by this stuff and couldn't even watch that guy anymore.

I don't think that's the episode I watched, but yes that sounds like it would be from that show.

guh? I said don't tell me you'd rather not use FEMA and try to do it on your own - not that FEMA will come to your doorstep and whisk you away to your govt. mansion.

  • I do like that idea of having about 2 weeks worth of pantry stuff. I try to make sure I have several dry/canned things that I could throw into a meal if I *had* to. Still, I think that most people who do this don't realize just how hard it is to be truly self sustainable for longer periods of time, versus, you know, just leaving.

I go between laughing at these crazy people and thinking I need to buy extra can goods on my next shopping trip. My favorite episode was the woman who has plans to eat full course meals and baked goods. She was like, "I'm not eating beans, I'm going to eat good!"

  • On a given day I don't have enough to throw together a meal BUT all my neighbors are old retirees with pantries stuffed to the brim so I'll just wait the one or two days until they die and steal from them.

  • And oh yeah, Jflute is in his 20-some year of the National Guard so we did have an emergency plan based on the plan that they have to follow for disasters etc. And apocalypse water. We always had apocalypse water.

  • If something so awful were to happen that I'd need to depend on the beans in my pantry for survival and there was nothing else I could do to get help...would it matter if I survive or not? Would I *want* to survive or not?

    I'll just continue living dangerously.

  • MrP is obsessed with the actual shooting zombies part. His latest concern is that the front of our house is open to the street, and marauders could have a long stretch to build up speed and ram the front door.

  • First thing during an apocalypse is that I'm getting the hell out of dodge. Too many people here. I have no need for food hoard if I'm mobile. The danger with that is that we're going to have to scavenge along the way, but I'm willing to take that risk.

Disease, zombies, aliens, what have you are too big of a risk should there be "an event."

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.

    I'm with you.

I get being prepared for hurricane season.  We always had a full pantry, so all we had to do each spring was test the generator, have gas, and have a few gallon jugs for water.

But preparing for an apocalypse?  I'm not going to bother.

  • I know the combos to the arcs are work and they have enough MREs and boxed water to feed 300 ppl for 3 days. I figure if I'm not already here when the apocolypse strikes, we can swing by fill up the trunk and then drive to the boonies where my friend has a crapton of guns and ammo.

FEMA can barely help people even without zombies. I'm definitely not counting on them when there are undead hordes bearing down on our cities.

  • I'm always amused by the number of people I hear talk about preparing for the apocalypse vs. the number I hear talk about planning for retirement or even an emergency savings. DH has some co-workers who constantly talk about what they have bought recently like gas masks and tons of rice and beans but they aren't at all concerned about retirement. One co-worker has also complained about not having the money for a $800 car repair. I guess they are assuming that zombies are more likely?

There's no social security for zombie invasions.
