Jindal's speech.  Also, the exorcism, but apparently I'm the only one who seems to care about that.

I have nothing constructive to add to this thread but I'm curious about that ^

Honestly, it's pretty easily brushed away.  It was college, voters didn't seem to care, but 4 years ago it was part of the discussion that Jindal was too crazy for McCain to pick him.  Why would it be different now?

  • Agree with Rubio.
  • Oh, I forgot about the pardons.  I don't actually see that as a huge stumbling bloc compared to some of the others.

I found an article saying that Rubio said "it's not me" just a few days ago.

    What about Alan West?

I'd say Nikki Haley, but I don't think Mittens wants to be accused of pulling a McCain.

She's under investigation. It would be a disaster.

Ooh, I didn't realize that.  For what?

Damn, South Carolina governors can't catch a break!

I believe it's tax fraud. I saw something on it but I haven't read much about it.

Paul Ryan.  He needs some sex & passion in that crustyass campaign.

And I love Dr. Gates, too.  (I grew up in CS)

I want to say I got my degree handed to me by the VP :-)

I like the guy, but I don't know if he's VP material.

  • I think it will be Pawlenty.

  • I'll give him Rick Scott in a heart beat.

ETA: Rubio would be a good choice - Hispanic and all that. even though his very existence seems to rely completely on turning women into nothing but cattle again.

This. Jindal was terribly lackluster. He has to get someone that will play up the way right folks.

I disagree and think that would be a huge mistake, unless Newt or Paul goes rogue and mounts a third party effort that could drain voters from Romney.

There's no need to appeal to the far right in the general - what, they're going to vote for Obama if Romeny doesn't have a conservative running mate?  I think it will be easier for Romney to pick up moderate Dem voters than it will be to lose conservative voters.  But go too far right or Jesus freak with a running mate and you'll scare them off.

Eh, I don't think a running mate ever really gains votes for someone.  But it is possible they could lose some, particularly if the lead on the ticket is old, a la McCain and Palin.  Palin was dynamic as hell and popular with the right who loved her and mistrusted McCain, but that didn't help in the general, did it?  If you want to repeat that mistake, go right ahead...

Romney might as well pick someone very established and very boring, preferably someone whose home state is a battleground state or even leans blue.  A senator with foreign relations or military experience.  Who fits that bill?

  • I'd love to see Huntsman since he was the one I wanted to be the nominee, but there's no way Romney will pick a Mormom/Mormon ticket. I think he really has to pick somebody from the south to balance the ticket.

The problem is that Romney is already so boring he needs someone to balance that a bit.  The initial surge from Palin was huge.  Romney needs someone like that, but capable.

He has to worry about going to moderate b/c he still needs the far right to actually go to the polls.

  • What does anyone think about Scott Brown? He is moderate but the Rs luuurved him when he ran in MA and he's going to lose his seat to Warren anyway...

I think is key, particularly if the SC strikes down all or part of Obamacare.  That's a huge reason people profess to hate him, and if that's not a factor, are they really going to be motivated to vote?

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • John Huntsman would be wonderful (but doubtful).

Personally, I think he should pick a moderate... the really conservatives all despise Obama and when push comes to shove, they are going to get out the vote.

Someone good, level headed, and moderate is the best chance to beat Obama as the people that really matter are the moderates and independents... the way right and way left already know who they are voting for IMO.

  • imagemysticporter:
My fear is that he's going to go for a "real conservative" to gain traction with the far right.  Maybe even Santorum or Gingrich.
Me too, although I doubt he'd pick either of those two loons. But maybe someone like the VA governor?

  • I'm still liking my Robert Gates choice (not that I think it would happen).  My Governor, Rick Sandoval, is a possible choice.  He's very well liked, appeals to the Hispanic vote, etc.

My 10 cents is on a southerner, white male, in either a swing state or severly socially conservative to get the voters to the polls, be cause we all know Romney isnt going to do it.  My vote is for either McDonnell or Jim DeMint! Jim DeMint! Jim DeMint!  God, I havent interwebz shouted that in a long time...

I think the last thing he'd do is pick another moderate Republican from MA, he's about as strong in New England as he can be.

Jeb Bush would be morely likely IMO if he wasn't a Bush, I think that will knock him out of contention still.

It's an interesting notion that he'd play better with mods and independents if he picks a moderate VP.  He's been sliding to Obama in polls, and I think a lot of that is losing that type of support in pandering to the far right for the nod.  At the same time, I'm not sure if he can gain critical mass there, unless he directly speaks out against some of the far right legislation that's been pushing through at the state level.  Otherwise the D's will have an easy time painting him as too conservative or at least as another Boehner dog wagged by the Tea Party tail.

I think he'll go all in, pull a far right running mate, and try and mobilize the base to get a far right conservative sweep of both Congress and the White House.  I'd be very, very sad, but that's my guess on the strategy, hoping to replay the mid-term conservative win.

  • Have you all forgotten. He has a secret pact with Ron Paul. Rand Paul will be his VP choice. White, Southern, TeaBagger.

I'd bet Jeb would say no. He doesn't need to be VP to become known, he can run at the top of the ticket if he gives America a few more years to forget about the last Bush Presidency. He's better off staying away from this train wreck.
