WWYD: House poor, husband just changed jobs to a 2 hr commute

Re: WWYD: House poor, husband just changed jobs to a 2 hr commute

  • It seems like they will do absolutely anything to get and keep that massive house!  It is clearly living beyond their means but it seems like they use it as a way to show all that they have accomplished.  I don't get it.
  • I knew this was about BP about halfway through the OP...lol.  I am sure there is more to it. I am sure they did not expect for him to have to commute that far and thought the wahm thing was permanent.  I would think they are working on making things better, like maybe be is looking for new employment. Who knows.

Also, I will admit that if I found a home like that and for that price, I would probably do whatever I could to get that house. My H and I found a house that normally would be over $500k.  It was listed at $325k. While that is somewhat out of our budget and we weren't even house hunting, we actually did contemplate putting in an offer (it was bank owned). We didn't because our guts said no, but I can see why the Bowers jumped at buying that house.

Man, I feel sorry for Jeremy.  Knowing about where they live vs. where the Equifax office is located, that is one long, traffic-filled commute.  Both ways.  Every day.  I don't know if schools are an issue - isn't she planning to home school?  He's probably just sucking it up and making the sacrifice so they can stay in the house they love out where they have land and quiet, and not have to deal with the craziness that is frequently the Atlanta metro area.

What area are they living in?

For a while I commuted from Canton to a location further South than the Equifax office, and it was brutal.  I can't imagine trying to do that long term.

I'm guessing they are way out in Gwinnett because when she was still in her old house and appeared on Nate Berkus she said she was from a town way up in Gwinnett Co.  I would think the new house is in the same general area or maybe a bit farther out since they wanted land and privacy.  Regardless of whether they are north, east, south or west, commuting from that far away to the city SUCKS!

I think they live in Loganville now.
Oh ok.  I have a friend who moved out there a year ago and I haven't even visited yet it's so far out!  Maybe he's taking the Gwinnett transit that goes into the city.  Still a long commute but at least he wouldn't be dealing with the traffic.

She just kind of skimmed over that announcement, right?  Maybe it's a temporary thing. I mean the reality is Loganville to Atl is probably what, 30-40 miles?  It's not all that far but I'm guessing traffic sucks both way, right? Hopefully he's getting compensation for having to come into the office instead of working from home. Also, if they love the house, love the area and are committed to staying there it might make just as much sense to change jobs rather than try to sell and move.  Either way, I don't think she said how long he's been having to commute but I would give the change some time and see how things went before I just threw up a For Sale sign.

  • I'm still kind of jealous that they could get a house like that for $325. So cheap! that would buy you a 100 year old shoe box where I live.

Not that I want a McMansion, but sheesh over 1000 sf for under 300k would be nice.

Why did they move in the first place?

    Answered my own question http://www.bowerpowerblog.com/2010/12/to-market-to-market-to-buy-a-dream-house/

And my OP, too. I don't understand why they moved then, so I doubt I would understand why they don't move now. Except it does sound like they're stuck.

ITA.  Lease to sell sounds like a horrible idea when you're buying a second house over your budget.  Yes it sounds like they are stuck now but they put themselves there.  If you're willing to be that risky with your money then you better be willing to make some drastic life changes like Jeremy changing jobs, Kate get a full time job, sell the house at a loss, or have Jeremy commute and expect him to never see those 4 kids they want to have.  There's a lot to be said about just being happy with what you have.

I'll give them some time before deciding if they're crazy. He could be looking for a new job, or they could be figuring out where to move/what to do on the house to get it sale-ready.

I also honestly don't think they could be underwater in the new house. They bought it as a foreclosure, and sure they've put work into it, but most of it was DIY that cost very little but made big changes. Everyone says they got a great deal, and they bought at the bottom of the market, so I can't help but think they could unload the place and break even, if not turn a profit. They just really seem to love that house, so despite being more than they should have spent, I don't think they're really underwater on 2 homes.
