The mothereffers at all the airlines that fly from NYC to Cincinnati decided to double the airfares to Cincinnati now that the NFL schedule is out. They know New York fans travel - they've done this before but we were always one step ahead of them. Oh well, we still want to make the trip and will just have to keep track of airfares.

CVG (Cinti) is a Delta hub so it is ALWAYS more expensive. Definitely check CMH (Columbus).

    Thanks for all the info!

So glad to hear Cincinnati doesn't allow smoking in bars. NYC hasn't allowed it for about a decade now and I love it.

I know there's quite a bit of history in the city, so I'd like to spend part of the weekend walking around some of the oldest neighborhoods there. While we could rent a car if we must, it would be great to get around on foot as much as possible.

Stay away from Over the Rhine.  It's dangerous.  I'm being very serious here.

Gonna raise my eyebrow to this. OTR was extremely dangerous in the past (2001 riots, anyone?), but it's undergoing some serious revitalization right now. I don't know that I'd go there yet as a young woman on my own, but I've been down there before with friends and have felt perfectly safe.

Also, this.  Per the Enquirer (Cincinnati's newspaper, not the publication that reports on alien abductions), crime in OTR has decreased dramatically over the past couple of years.  We looked at some lofts there the last time we were home.  It's definitely not the area it was when I was a kid learning to drive and getting the, "stay away from Race between block X and block Y" speech from my dad.

I'm just shocked that you are going to travel TO Cinncinnati to see a non-conference game.    Against the BENGALS! Wink

--Signed, Skins fan who is super excited to get RGIII in 6 days, but saw Cinncinnati as a home game and realize that's a money-loser.

We like to travel for sports no matter what (mostly hockey and football).

  • For fun bars, Mount Adams is close to downtown and has a great environment. Fountain Square is in downtown and there are some good places to eat as well as bars around the square. If you want a "Cincinnati" restaurant, Montgomery Inn has awesome ribs & food, the Boathouse location of Mont. Inn is on the Ohio River and is a nice place to have dinner.

Skyline is definitely better than Gold Star. Get Graeter's cream, it is AMAZING. If you want a local to Cincinnati style pizza, LaRosa's is the place to go!

I lived in Clifton for college & grew up in Cincy and while OTR used to be horrendous they have really revitalized the area in the last few years. I would still be cautious as certain areas still aren't the best, but they have some great new places to eat and cool bars to check out.  Have fun in Cincinnati, I miss living there!

  • I just want to recommend the Dayton airport again.  They are consistently cheaper (I've been using them for the past like 3 or 4 years).  And way closer than Columbus.  About an hour and a half to two hour drive.  Check it out, for realio.
    Shot first, questions later.
  • As for the OTR stuff, I've been away for a few years because I joined up in the Army, but I still wouldn't go there.  It's like asking for trouble.  I don't care what kind of rehabilitation they have claimed to have made.  One of my bffs walked up on a guy getting mugged.  It stays with me.  Sorry.

  • Ahem.

Just jumping back in to give a plug for OTR.

Chatting with my Cincinnati-based MUA (yeah, we're still close - weird, I know) about being in Ohio this week, and thinking about heading down to Cinti on Saturday, and asked her for recs.

Her suggestions were two places in OTR - Japps (the place I mentioned earlier), and Bakersfield.

A little common sense goes a long way there - don't walk alone, don't wave cash around, etc.  But there's so much great stuff happening there now that I definitely wouldn't write it off because it used to have a higher crime rate.

  • I will say some of OTR is respectable.  Some isn't.  I guess we need to draw a nest diagram, but I'm not so inclined.

My main concern is with the poster telling her to fly into Colombus.  That's just crazy.  Dayton, people, DAYTON.

My bff was robbed at gunpoint while on his front porch in Clifton 30 seconds after I had left, but I don't hold it against the area in contradiction of the city's crime stats.

  • Good call on Dayton - flights to there are way cheaper, thanks!

I'd highly recommend Neon's for a drink, and Lucy Blue's for a "I've had too much to drink and am craving a great slice of pizza."  Japp's is pretty awesome, too (owned by some of the same people who own Neon's).

Mmmm, Lucy Blue's.  Their pizza is amazing, especially after the bars close and you're inhaling a large pizza with your two equally drunk friends because you ZOMG have to eat RIGHT NOW.  When you have class in less than 5 hours.  Not that I know anything about that...

I forgot about Dayton.  Glad to hear they're cheaper, the drive from Dayton to Cinci should be sliiiightly shorter (Columbus is about 2 hours, Dayton's closer to an hour and a half).

  • Ditto on flying into Dayton, Jeff Ruby's, and Graeter's.  I prefer Gold Star, however I like Skyline, too.  Hope you have fun!
