Question about today

What makes today that exciting?  I know it's the begining of a new president taking office, but why is there so much more hype today then any other president taking office in the past?

Re: Question about today

  • I think they hype is for a variety of reasons:

-First-ever African-American president (the timing with Martin Luther King Jr's bday adds to that hype, too!) This is HISTORY!!!

-Extreme disappointment with the exiting Administration

-IMO, the fact that Barack is self-made which gives a lot of people hope

    Just my opinion....

  • Are you kidding?? This is the first Black president in history. This presidential election is different in so many ways. Please tell me you were kidding when you wrote that!  lol   It is also a huge change in politics and beliefs.  We are coming out of the age of Bush and into a new era.
  • Isn't every past president being sworn in history as well?  I think the country needs to stop looking at him as a black man and just start looking at him as an American then maybe we can all move on and no longer distingush each other as white or black, man or woman, and finally start seeing everyone as just people.
  • Yup.  Agree with eb & 6ft.
  • The black/white thing is never going to change.  It was a huge deal in the world of sports when Tony Dungee was the first black coach to win a Super Bowl.
  • I just think that the country needs to start judging people by the contents of there morality and integrity and not by the color of their skin or what their undies cover.
  • This goes way past just being another President being sworn in....

Barack has never made race an issue in his campaign, but the fact of the matter is, it's major history! 43 Presidents have been white males! There was a time when a black man was considered to be worth 3/5 as much as a white man - WTF?!

Thank you Natalie - you took the words out of my mouth...

I may get flamed for this - but isnt he techincally the first Bi-racial President - not the first Black President?

    Yes he is bi-racial.

Again it shouldn't matter if he's black, white, or pink.  Having an African American father doesn't make him any better at being president then anyone else.  I just wish the media would stop making race an issue.

To finally move on from race/gender issues we need to stop making them the headlines.

  • No one ever said that he is going to be a BETTER President because he is Black, White, Bi-Racial, etc. I think it's just plain ol' exciting that this isn't another cookie cutter President. There was also a lot of hype around JFK (being Catholic).

  • For me, it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. ?Our nation expects great things from him as a leader and many, myself included, are eagerly anticipating the things he will do with his time in office.

Maybe to you it just SEEMS like everyone is overly excited because you're a Republican?

Unfortunately, in this country race is still an issue as a whole (not for me personally)..it SHOULDN'T be, but it is...and I think that's why it's a big deal. Also, if someone is bi-racial with african american decent, they are considered African American in this country...again, i don't agree, but it's a fact.

Wow. well, I dont think that he is better at being a President than anyone else.  However I do think that the fact that he is bi-racial shows the strides our country is making.

Whether you like it or not, today is historic because a bi-racial president is something that many people in this country wouldn't have thought would happen 20, 30, 40 years ago. Same as if a woman was elected...or a bi-racial of another race (asian, hispanic, etc).   Perhaps today marks the day that going forward race will soon not be an issue or something historic when someone is elected, appointed or does something.

I am proud to be American today and am excited for the strides we are going to make in the future.

  • I see the historic siginficance of today.  I am excited to see what the future holds.  I am looking forward to this administration.  I hope that Obama's voice of change brings great things to this country.  My problem lies in the coverage that is focusing on his race rather than his message.

I respectfully disagree... I actually think the media coverage is talking about his message of hope, change, and real work!

  • This has nothing to do with me being a repulican.

This country has come a very long way from where it was.  However it has a much further road to travel.  By hyping his being part black is not the way to do it.  The media needs to get a clue and realize that he is no more American then anyone on this board.

Today - yes... but over the past few weeks - no.  Hopefully today is the turning point.

  • Jamie- I have said the same thing about the media creating the story entirely around his race rather than him as a person.  I got particularly annoyed on election night because I didnt really see race when I thought about him.  I was a little put off that all the coverage focused on his race.

However, I kind of took a step back and thought about it.  I realized how historic it is and how much it means to so many people in our country.  I mean, to go from a country where black people were treated as second class citizens (I mean, come on...they had to use seperate drinking fountains, enterances, etc)  to a country where someone who is bi-racial is  president is pretty significant.

Sorry, I justget a little fired up when someone says "I dont see why this Inaguration is so special."  I dont see how you CAN'T see why it is special.

    Me too.

  • I am excited to have a president who I believe will do everything in his power to make our country a better place to live in.  I believe he brings hope to many Americans.

  • I'm only going to interject that I don't like that he has been turned in to a celebrity and is looked at that way more so than the leader of our nation.

I could not agree more.  It isnt about him being black, it is about our country elected him regardless of his color.  You want us to see beyond his race, well that is what this election FINALLY did, it showed that we CAN see beyond race.

If you really want to know why this is so significant, talk to someone that is an older African American, they will tell you why.  It showed that we as a country finally saw passed color and elected someone based on their character.

That's your opinion.... I don't think that's true. I think that, for once, a lot of people are actually excited about a President... that's something that hasn't happened in a very long time!

I totally agree.  I am also so impressed at how humble he is about all of this.  He has such bragging rights and is very focused on the tasks at hand.

I don't know. I work with inner city youth and to hear them get excited about politics and engaged in the process got ME excited about this election way before i ever cared.  Yes, the media has created this whole buzz around him, but part of me thinks that it is the people of this country that have really turned him into a "celebrity."  Whether it is good or bad to have a pres with this kind of attention, I dont know.  On one hand I think that it is never good to believe in someone blindly, however, maybe this buzz will unite our country, which I do think we need.

Like I said in previous posts, I dont agree with how the media has solely focused on his race.  However, I think that the people of this country have a lot to do with creating Obama into the "celebrity" he is.

Gosh, I sound like this huge Obama fanatic!  I actually don't love him, nor do I believe that he is the cure to everything.  I think he has a long long long road ahead of him in the next 4 years.

I try and see both sides of the spectrum and I found myself having an opinion on this discussion!  Sorry to keep writing these long posts!

I didn't say he wasn't humble.  Nor did I say he was acting like a celebrity, I said that the way he is being treated is somewhat of a celebrity status.  And You are right I am entitled to my opinion.  But read it correctly...I never said Jack about him acting like a celebrity.

  • It just bothers me that a country can come so far for the media to totally turn it into a race thing.  I don't see a black man I just see a man which is why I don't understand the hoop-la centered around his race.

Never said that you did. I wasn't being snippy.... I know you're entitled to your opinion, I was simply disagreeing.

I just get a little annoyed when individuals are put in a certain light when it's not his or her own doing. Because although I do not know Barack personally, I am 99% sure that he would never want his race to be an issue as President; never want to be treated like a celebrity; etc. Regardless of how you feel about Barack as a President, this is a historic occasion. That's all.
