Am I the Only One (some Outlander spoilers)...
Re: Am I the Only One (some Outlander spoilers)...
Not every book is for every person. Personally, I hate The Hunger Games with a passion. I mentioned it on the worst books poll but I just can't get past the fact that children murdering other children for the sport of a few is deemed acceptable in that world. I can't. I nearly didn't finish the book but I did. I kind of wish I hadn't.
If you don't like Jamie, that's fine. To each her own. But I don't think that we should judge each other for our reading preferences. If so, then all of you who loved HG might just end up as kid murderers in my mind just as I'm sure the Jamie-lovers are insane sadists who can't separate abuse from love in someone else's mind.
I will say that I didn't add to this conversation originally because by the time I saw the thread, it was pretty into things I didn't care about discussing, but throw me in the ambivalent about Jamie pile. Before, during, and after the abusive scenes, I still didn't care about him one way or the other. He just doesn't do it for me. I only read the first Outlander book and really have no intention of continuing the series, not because I hated it, it's just not really what I like to read.
However, I totally understand where the characters (and the author) were coming from when they made all the decisions they did -- though I do tend to agree with Booney about the way modern-minded Claire reacts. And I completely respect my fellow NBCers for their love of Jamie. Did I recoil a little during the abusive scenes? Sure. But I also understood why DG included them.
I really expected to love Outlander. I love historical fiction/romance and time-travel fiction.
But I HATED Jamie. I remember the first few times Claire encounters him he's referred to as "young Jamie" so I kept expecting her to meet "old Jamie" who was going to be amazing.
But of course after a few chapters I realized that young Jamie was THE Jamie and he just never interested me at all.
I read about 3/4 of the book and still didn't care for either of the main characters, so I forced myself to finish the book by skimming and then threw my copy away in the trash. I was THAT disappointed.
Please feel free! Hahahahaha
