Velvet-sometimes people CAN afford the stuff and she will tell them it is a waste of money. Like the shoe or clothing posts. Or when arbor gold said she wanted to dye her hair and she told her it was a waste of money and to wear her natural hair color. I've seen that one a few times on MM.
She dropped in an MM post about purses where the OP had a budget of $500 and was looking for recommendations. Her only comment was she could not IMAGINE spending that much on a purse! LOL. Way to contribute.

I was going to post the same thing, but then I backed out... I get more compliments on my $10 sale rack purses than any expense purse I've ever owned.

To be honest, I've never spent that much on a purse. I like some of my cheap purses from Aldo more than my Cole Haan. But I wouldn't drop in on a post where the OP has already said she's going to spend that money to state that opinion.
  • imagebarefoot barista:
I think that people have thought about those things-MM doesn't get a ton of posts from people that are in stupid debt asking if they can buy a 500 dollar purse. I have a well funded e fund, no debt other than the mortgage and a good amount in savings. Do I know that I can put that 500 in savings- heck yes, but I want to buy the purse. What is wrong with that? I could also buy all of my clothes from goodwill, free cycle, and learn to sew- none of which I'm going to do. Lots of things could be deemed a waste of money.
You know these things about yourself. Obviously sttrangers don't. So feel free to disregard such advice. But I'm sure you know as well that most of the reg. posters on MM are an anomaly and that many Americans make simple mistakes with money all the time. They carry credit card balances, they buy large things like houses or cars that they really can't afford without drastically cutting back on thir lifestyles, they don't save enough for retirement or college, and on and on.

I know from MM that she is extremely frugal, and that she rarely just congratulates someone on making a financial accomplishment. It is usually followed with a *but*.

I'm only refering to MM-relate dpsts here: I wouldn't call her "extremely frugal". I think she is financially conservative and she usally gives very practical and realistic financial advice. She is blunt and straightforward, but usually spot on. She just doesn't sugar coat things. People don't like hearing that they can't afford their dream XXXX on their current income and that their luxury purchase wasn't a true "need" and not a wise use of an e-fund.

This is what I love about her on the Buying a House board.  I am going to refrain from saying anything negative about her, because this thread feels icky and cuts a little too close to home.

Relax.  Your request isn't icky.  The "do you like her or don't you" conversation that has resulted is.  JFC.

That may have been your intention in the beginning.

This thread, though, is definitely squicky feeling.

Imagine how you would feel if this much conversation was going on about you, with you not in it.

I think the proper response is "chill".

And, I agree with it being squicky, but I had to respond as a way to defend against the bashing of her.  And it is backhanded bashing now that we are high on the post count so save the faux pearl clutching/saying it is not (sorry for the bluntness, but now I wish I hadn't responded in the beginning so I am on edge).

It never bothers +AW+ to jump in to the many many many posts criticizing her, her religion, her hair covering, her meat eating etc.and Sisu doesn't strike me as a wilting flower. So I say again, I DO NOT THINK SHE GIVES A SHYT WHAT WE THINK OR SAY ABOUT HER IN THIS THREAD.

Now whenever someone tries to confront someone/something or god forbid more than 2 people agree, a group shaming occurs and its called a "pile on."

I agree, that's why I like Sisu (and AW) even though I might not agree with them a lot of the time. I think she'll read this, roll her eyes and laugh. I don't see her running away or crying about it - she never has in the past.

Look, all I know is that as someone who had a couple "Oh my god I hate her" threads dedicated to her on other boards, and a more recent round of "she's just so sad; I feel sorry for her", I feel like carrying on a discussion about someone's relative merits and deficiencies is squicky (is that the word?).  Yeah, it's so noble because "at least you're not talking about her behind her back."  Yeahno.  PM someone and talk about her behind her back.  No one needs to read an entire thread debating whether they're likeable.

And that's all I'm going to say about that.

You get no vote here.  You're a coward by any measure and the shiny newness of your *signature* biting humor has worn off.

I would take that to the FB group, but I wouldn't know who to specifically address.

  • Back on track-I just wish shed respond or reply to some of the inflammatory posts that she starts. Like the one in the Trayvon Martin thread. There was one yesterday, and Tartaruga had a funny response. Can't remember what it was about-I'm pretty sure it was about Obama.

Hey now, as the inventor of Pi, I am equal opportunity.

That said, I thought my pi joke was funny for about 5 minutes, then it became overused.

I think Sisugal means well, and I like her money advice. But, I think this board is not well suited for posting and running at all, and I understand why she's not the most popular poster around here.  That said, I think the pile ons are over the top, and frequently cross the line away from good natured ribbing and into mean girl nastiness.

This is why I prefer to try to direct my thoughts directly at her posts rather than in some thread getting all meta.  If she posts something that I think is ridiculous, I will call her out on it.  Whether she chooses to respond is her business.  People can draw their own conclusions based on what both of us post. Done and done.

I also agree that she generally gives good money advice although I believe sometimes her advice is a bit too conservative.
