Do you like your first name?

If you could change it, what would it be?

Re: Do you like your first name?

  • No, I don't. It is one of the most popular names the year I was born. I don't know what I would change it too, probably something that didn't date me so much.

  • I like my first name.

When I was little though, I wanted to be named Cosette after I saw Les Mis.  I was probably totally insufferable, wandering around the house trying to look like a victimized urchin singing "Castle On A Cloud."

Was it because of the American Girl doll? Wink

I very much like my first name. It wasn't very popular when I was born, so I never had to worry about being confused with anyone else.
    I like privacy. A lot.
  • I like my name.  When I was younger I wanted it to be something unique.  If I was a boy I was going to be Grant and I told my mom she should have named me that.

  • I like my first name and the nickname that I mostly go by. I used to get teased about my nickname when I was little but when my mom said I could change it, I decided I could withstand the teasing.

  • I disliked it greatly as a kid.  It's everyone's Grandma's name!

I'm sort of whatever about it now.  It's a decent name.  Although!!! Last winter I went to a restaurant and gave my name to the hostess and watched her write down "Merry".

POSSIBLY..... lol :) Although I never owned an American Girl Doll. My mom said they were too much $, which is totally true, and I liked stuffed animals better than dolls anyway. (which makes sense b/c I like animals better than kids now)

But I did name ALL of the baby dolls I had samantha. it was ridiculous.

I also liked that it could be shortened to Sam. like the girl from who's the boss

  • I like mine OK I guess. Never really thought about it.

It was one of the most common, classic names and that never bothered me, which is why I don't understand the recent trend to name children uniquely.

Maybe its because my name wasn't trendy, just popular?

  • I do not like my name at all.

I use my nickname as what is in my screenname, and it is just ok to me.  My full name sucks.......hard

  • I love my first name, though I didn't so much as a kid.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

  • I really like my name. Not very many people have it, yet it's not weird or anything like that.

The only complaint is that it's LONG, so it was a b*tch when I was a kid to write out. lol

I remember being a kid and thinking "when I have a kid, they are going to have a short name like Ann or something." lol.

ETA: I *hate* it when people try to use nicknames with my long name. The nicknames are horrible sounding. Reminds me of a fat boy's name.

  • I like my name but I share it with A LOT of people. I was supposed to be named Katherine after my grandmother but my father vetoed that. So if I could change it, I would go to Katherine.

I have a lot of friends that wanted that name because of the Samantha doll and I thought about it too when I was little.  I never had an American Doll, but I liked the names Molly and Samantha because of them.

  • i like it now.  i've always thought it was okay, but a bit boring.  and it's a family name; i'm named after my aunt.  it's a tradition in my mother's family for there always to be an "aunt cvillefirstname," so the sibling of the person with my name is supposed to name one her kids with my first name.  i told my brother the tradition can stop with our generation (not that it was a threat).  i mean, really.  and my aunt is . . . not my favorite person ever.

i campaigned my mom to change my name legally to madeleine, and then to bernadette after i saw the song of bernadette and was convinced that any second now i was going to be visited by visions of mary and become beatified.  i used to pray for that in church all the time.

and my middle name is one of the names i consider to be a default, uncreative middle name for a girl (ann/e, marie, leigh/lee, etc.).  it's also the same as my mom's middle name.

and my grandmother strongarmed me into taking her actual first name (she went by her middle) as my saint's name when i got confirmed.  i wanted bernadette then too.

anyway, NEITHER of my kid's names have ever been, to my knowledge, used by any family member in my or my husband's families.  ever.  and they're normal, regular names.  just not recycled from eleventy billion previous generations.

apparently i have feelings about this.

    kiss it, nest.

I don't really think about it. I've said this before, but I don't really identify with it. It's weird. I mean, duh, I know people are talking to/about me when they use it, but I don't think of myself as "Amy." I don't know if this makes any sense.. lol
  • Yes, I actually really like it.
promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I actually love my name. It's common, but spelled a little bit differently.

  • I didn't really like my name as a kid.

I don't really mind it now, but a lot of the time when I'm telling someone my name over the phone they think I'm saying "Erin" which is annoying.

I love your first name. It was one of my top baby girl names, until I met DH, and he as a sister and almost FSIL with the same name. I'd still use it if I could though!

Yeah, apparently I can't pronounce my name either, because people often think I'm saying "emmy."

  • No, I sure don't. I don't know what I'd re-name myself if I could ... That's a crazy tough question!

yeah, there she was ... like disco lemonade ...
  • It's okay. I've always loved the name Katherine for some reason.

My name is Melissa. I hated it when I was a kid because there were always 5 Melissa's in my class.

  • Not really.

My name is confused with a guys name frequently, misspelled and hard to pronounce for some people. My siblings have normal names so i am all "wtf" at my name.

LOL... ok, these people are stupid.  I get Tiffany and Bethany a lot, which makes more sense than Nelson.

my sister's name is Amy, and she is TOTALLY an Amy. You do not strike me as someone who would be named Amy, even though I knew that was your real name.

  • Not at all. It was popular for like five minutes in 1978.  It's a very sweet, girlish name but I'm kind of a biiitch, and have been since I was about 21 months old, so it just doesn't fit. I think if I were naming myself, I'd go with something short, with a lot fewer vowels.
