Do you like your first name?

Re: Do you like your first name?

  • I have never minded it, though I envied friends who had names that could be shortened into a nickname.

I will say that it was not until high school that I had another Laura in the class. Oh and for a while I wished my name was Lauren. lol

  • It's i-ight.

I would change it to one of the names I wanted as a child:

    Crystal
    Rhonda
    or
    Misty

  • I do like my name. Its different, and that's what my mom was going for. I do get people saying my name incorrectly all the time. Its amazing what people come up with. Ashton/ Austin/ Allison/ Ashlyn.

You might need a new career to go with some of those names :)

  • Yes, very much.

Although when I was little, I didn't like it at all, and wanted to be one of the 184 Jennifer's in my class. Instead, every Barbie and Cabbage patch doll I owned was named Jennifer.

  • I don't mind it but I wish my Mom would have spelled it differently.  I'm always getting called different variations of my name.

  • I like my first name but not how it is spelt. I wanted to change it to an easier spelling when I got married but my mom and husband both wanted me to keep it.
  • Floyd.BFloyd.B member

    no. it's snoresville.

funny enough - I have no idea what I would change it to.

    Floyd P. Bamker - can't spell
  • My name is Tory-I didn't like my name as a kid because my sister had all these fun things with her name on it (same as Tamb) but I had this weird name with an even weirder spelling. Now though I love it....it's becoming a little more popular but usually spelled differently. It's usually Tori because it's a shortened version of Victoria.

I do get annoyed with people assuming my name is Victoria (it's one thing to ask) but I've had people say "Oh hi Victoria" after I introduce myself. I also never get my name spelled correctly on anything. Oh well, I still like it.

  • No.  I always wanted it to be something soft and feminine, like Julie or Julia, lol.

Oh and Anna told me the other day that she wanted a pretty name.  I said "I picked Anna because I thought it was the prettiest name ever" and she laughed and said it was not beaaautiful at all, not like Amelia, or Camilla, or Emilia, or Alana, or Arlyssa (where did she get that one? I'm worried I'll end up with grandchildren with you-nique names).  WTF? lol

So maybe nobody likes their name?

    I like my first name.

When I was little though, I wanted to be named Cosette after I saw Les Mis.  I was probably totally insufferable, wandering around the house trying to look like a victimized urchin singing "Castle On A Cloud."

    lol

I wanted to be Caroline, as in Princess Caroline, and Caroline Kennedy (we are of an age) they were always in the paper when I was a kid and my name is close, but no cigar. Two of my aunts think my name IS Caroline, and I get notes from them sometimes addressed to Caroline, and it secretly pleases me no end.

  • I didnt growing up because I was the only Emilie I knew. But as an adult, I love it AND the fact that my parents chose the traditional French spelling.
  • Mines is Rache.  I like it.  It was a very common name growing up, but now not so much.

I also like that the bible story that goes with the name (from Wikipedia):

During Jacob's stay, he fell in love with Rachel and agreed to work seven years for Laban in return for her hand in marriage. On the night of the wedding, the bride was veiled and Jacob did not notice that Leah, Rachel's older sister, had been substituted for Rachel. Whereas "Rachel was lovely in form and beautiful," "Leah had tender eyes"[3]. Later Jacob confronted Laban, who excused his own deception by insisting that the older sister should marry first. He assured Jacob that after his wedding week was finished, he could take Rachel as a wife as well, and work another seven years as payment for her.

This is also the reason that in obersevant Jewish weddings, the groom sees the bride before the ceremony and puts the veil over her head. So he can make sure no one substituted anyone else for his bride.

  • I guess. It's not very common, which is nice.  But it's not uncommon either, if that makes sense.
Always be yourself. Unless you suck.
  • Well, the thing is, if you know me you know that by no means am I an Annie, even when I was little. I'm an Anna, forever &ever. Though it does help weed out those chummy telemarketers. Nope, no Anne at this number, sorry. *click*.

  • I was NEVER a big fan of my name...It felt like everyone from elementary school through Highschool had my name! EX: There where four girls with the same name in my 5th grade class alone!

I would always make people call me by my middle name, cause I didn't know anyone else by that name. In fact until recently I have never met anyone with my middle name, now I hear it all the time.

LUCKILY: I have grown to love my name, I feel like it gives me character and I feel it fits me as a person.

  • I guess I really don't mind my name. My only complaint is that it's pretty common. I prefer it over the alternative. I was supposed to be named Brenda, but my dad eventually vetoed that.

  • I love my first name, it's not terribly popular, people kinda mess up the pronunciation often. I do however HATE my last name, and have been shopping for a new one for years. Hopefully it comes attached to a hot guy that worships me!

It's ok because of the story behind it. My sister (who is 4 years older than me) thought of it because it rhymed with my twin sister's name. It doesn't quite rhyme, but she was a preschooler at the time so she was close.

It was popular in the 1920s so more 80+ year olds have it than 20+ year olds.

  • I like my name. It does bother me more than it should that I am continually correcting people on its spelling, but I think it suits me.

As a kid, I also loved the names Samantha (and, yes, I did have the American Girl doll) and Elizabeth.

DH is another who's often called by the nickname for his first name which he never uses, not even amongst friends. He will introduce himself as James and still get called Jim right back. He is so not a Jim.

  • I love my name.  Common enough that everyone is familiar with it, but I was usually the only one in my classes with it.  (It's Lindsey)

Weird, my name is Anna too and no one has ever tried to call me Anne or Annie. Maybe because I pronounce it the non-English way, so Ahh-nuh instead of rhyming with banana. I am very much an Anna too.

Yes.  My parents chose my name on the theory it would translate easily when I travel and move.  (And I was named after my mom's MOH who had died). The "translates easily" thing has been a huge advantage for me so I really appreciate it.
  • It's really bothering me that everyone is talking about their name but hardly anyone is revealing what their name actually is.

  • I love it because my dad named me. Although a lot of people think I say Ashlynn when I say my name. So, if I had to change it I would change it to Ashlynn because my dad's middle name is Lynn and that would be awesome!
  • As a kid I was touch and go, because there are SO MANY nicknames that people could come up with. Plus - I was always getting asked if I liked green eggs and ham. I'm a Samantha but typically go by Sam.

Samurai, Spam, Spamual, Sam-antha.Sammy Seal, Sam I am, Sambo, Sami and so many more. I hated Sami the most. Only my IL's call me that, because when I first started dating H I felt weird asking them to not do it. They're the only ones allowed though.

And yes, I have a Samantha doll. I wanted a Molly though, becuase I hated that people assumed I wanted Samantha because of my name even though I loved all her books the most. I was weird.

    EDIT - darn typos.

  • I've never liked my name, but I don't think I could ever change it to something totally different.

I have often thought about changing it to what it was supposed to be, which is a longer version of my same name. My mom was one of those who tried to deliberately pick names without nicknames, so at the last minute she changed it to the short version instead (which can be a standalone name as well) but the result is that I've always felt like I had a nickname without a real name.

  • Yes, I love it. Both my first and middle names rock. My parents did well.
