Re: Applebees Hiring Freeze

  • imagevlagrl29:

Oh wow!! Scary! They are one of many!!

  • Also, Papa Johns is reducing hours.  this is just the beginning I believe.  It's a chain reaction that starts with restaurants and grocery stores.

  • This doesn't surprise me.

Both Applebees and Papa John's are known to be horrible employers.   They rank right up there with WalMart.

  • Just found this.....

As The Wall Street Journal aptly notes:

Some low-wage employers are moving toward hiring part-time workers instead of full-time ones to mitigate the health-care overhaul's requirement that large companies provide health insurance for full-time workers or pay a fee.

Several restaurants, hotels and retailers have started or are preparing to limit schedules of hourly workers to below 30 hours a week. That is the threshold at which large employers in 2014 would have to offer workers a minimum level of insurance or pay a penalty starting at $2,000 for each worker.

Pillar Hotels & Resorts this summer began to focus more on hiring part-time workers among its 5,500 employees, said Chief Executive Chris Russell. The company has 210 franchise hotels, under the Sheraton, Fairfield Inns, Hampton Inns and Holiday Inns brands.

"The tendency is to say, 'Let me fill this position with a 40-hour-a-week employee.' "Mr. Russell said. "I think we have to think differently."

  • Oh dear lord, vlagirl, why do you always post stories from the most biased, ridiculous websites ever?

Are you aware that this website once published a fake photo of Trayvon Martin and spread it around to make him look even more like a "hoodlum"? Complete trash.

  • cats - I'm not surprised at all.  that's a major long list.  All these companies and others all around the US were just sitting still until they knew which way the election was going to turn out.  now that they know the candidate that won, they can go ahead and proceed.  It's really sad.  I'm very nervous about the economy and how it will effect me and DH's life.

I had mentioned in a thread below that apparently full time is 30 hours now and I had no idea.  When did this go into affect.  Full time could (hypothetically) go down to 20 hours and these companies would schedule below 20.  Do people not get that companies need to survive and in order to survive they need to do what they gotta do.

I'm sorry, I don't have the time to research my sources to find out if they are un biased enough for you.  Get over it ....would you prefer I only cite sources that are completely liberal/democratic based?  this is getting ridic!  And is wall street journal too biased as well??

  • I would be more impressed if the higher-ups in the companies would give up some of their salary and/or bonuses to pay for their businesses to survive, instead of blaming Obama.

  • And I can't roll my eyes hard enough that Bank of America is getting rid of 30,000 jobs because of the ACA or Obama.

I will bet $10 they are getting rid of those jobs because they lost a whole lotta money in the housing catastrophe, which was caused, in party, by Bank Of America's greed.

So I have a really really really hard time feeling sorry for Bank of America.  I feel sorry for the employees, not the company.

Of course they wouldn't.  They'd rather complain the Obama is the cause instead of recognizing that they should maybe give up their 3rd home and 15th car.

  • No, but at least find a source where the next story isn't blasting Obama for playing a round of golf.

Honestly though, you can link whatever you want here, I'll stop commenting on that, I'm just saying, it would help your credibility if it wasn't in your face biased.

I'm sure Applebees is going through with a hiring freeze, but exactly like CG said, these companies don't have money issues, they have greed issues. It's just easier to blame Obama.

Eta: that wasn't exactly what CG said, but I agree, the higher ups would rather lay people off than take a pay cut.

has anyone ever seen Company Men? I recommend it.

which is why i think the corporate world is such a joke now.  Way back in the day you could get a job and know you would be there for the rest of your life.  Not anymore, they don't give a crap about anyone because they know you are replaceable.  Or that they could give your job to another employee there and not pay them more and save money with your salary.

I agree with that too. Companies are all about beating ly sales and cutting whereever they can, even if it means eliminating great staff.

  • I don't understand your question, vl.

Is there a misplaced comma there or something?
