Re: Applebees Hiring Freeze
To quote Margaret Thatcher: Socialism works until you run out of other people's money.
Free health care? Pure stupidity.
If you would have paid attention, you would have read that she was being sarcastic.
Have you read this yet?

Just in case you hadn't clicked on CG's post linking it yet.
In the same vein as you saying all liberals are takers, I'm gonna go ahead and mention that liberals tend to be more educated and have higher IQs than conservatives. But ya know, sweeping generalizations and such.
I've seen this quote on P&CE recently - am I the only one that thinks it's completely mistargeted? 1.) The US is not and is not going to become socialist, 2.) Obama care is funded. 3.) Our net health care costs more when it's fragmented and assigned by employment.
The only stupidity I see is the inability to process those facts. It's so sad to me that some political enthusiasts can only see things in black and white - i.e., either the US is socialist or it's not. They don't understand that there's a full gamut of possibilities and that we should choose the best of everything, even if we disagree with the overall ideology. It's that kind of thinking that leads to such extreme partisanship.
You really have no idea how the Affordable Care Act works, do you? For starters, no one is getting free healthcare except certain people living below the poverty level -- but you know what? They were already getting free healthcare. It's called Medicaid. (Seniors get "free" healthcare too -- Medicare.)
Everyone else has to pony up for health insurance -- which because of new regulations will be more accessible and affordable -- but deductibles, premiums and copays still apply. Furthermore, what do you think people did before this law? They showed up at emergency rooms for their "free" healthcare! And we all footed the bill with higher hospital charges.
Is that a sad heart, major?
I don't understand your fancy emoticons, yo.
jaykay. Kind of.
lolz.
Cool beans.
I
you too, major!
Waaaay back in the 70's when I was a teenager I worked for
a supermarket that turned union. They stopped hiring full time
associates, no benefits to pay.
This has been going on a looooong time.
It's strange that all layoffs are being blamed on the ACA. If Romney took over and the ACA repealed, could we blame all the layoffs that still happened on the repeal?
Some of the companies listed are frankly, *** companies that are going down the toilet. BOA, for example, is still hurting from betting big on the housing bubble. They were too big to fail, otherwise Capitalism would have gobbled them up and spit them out. It's a poopy company that doesn't deserve to exist anymore.
Boston Scientific has been slowly circling the drain forever. Applebee's has lost market share for years to competitors. I bet if you were put on the spot to name three casual restaurant chains, Applebees would not make your list.
Layoffs are pretty common in pharma and biotech. Bristol-Meyers Squibb is laying off sales staff as demand for one of its drugs wanes, they likely will invest that money in more R&D or acquiring a smaller company. So simply putting together a list without looking and nuance of each company and blaming it on the ACA is pretty crude at best.
The idea that you're saving money with your health care system? Pure stupidity. If you don't believe me, take a look for yourself.

But hey, who wants to save billions of dollars a year?
Maybe we just need to change the nature of health care so that payment must be required up front. And eliminate Medicare and Medicaid. Just let the old people and the poor people die. Taxpayer burden eased?
