Re: It's Friday Randoms

  • Today is Friday - yeah!!!! I have to grocery shop tonight and do dishes - blah!!

Does anyone know how late the Brann's breakfast buffet is open until on Sunday?

  • Apparently everyone burned themselves out with yesterday's randoms, 150!? I'm so impressed! Smile I'm headed out to spend some $$$ clothes shopping is on the agenda for the day. Hopefully I can find some sales!
  • i"m so tempted to take half a vacation day, but I know I wouldn't really get anything done.
  • Just got back from strawberry picking and coffee with one of my sisters and my mom.  We went to Krupp Farm - the berries look and taste so good, thankfully. Ten pounds for $11.50! Plus it was fun hanging out with my sister and mom.

Not sure if you are a fan of the Gap, but they had and extra 50% their women's sale clothes when I was there yesterday.  Lots of good deals. Might be worth checking out.

I heard about that sale - sounds awesome.

Today we'll be lucky if we hit 50.  :)  Fridays are always so slow around here.

  • I'm very happy that my first week back is coming to a close.  I'm exhausted.  Looking forward to some weekend naps.  Smile

I hope my weekend is relaxing because I think Monday is going to be stressful.  I have a meeting about my maternity leave and we're getting a quote on new furnace/air units.  I'm nervous for both.

Moms, how did maternity leave talk go for you?  I get 4 wks paid, so I'm debating on how much time I want to take off.  8 wks?  10 wks?  12 wks?  Any wisdom to share?

  • Good Morning!

I have Fridays off, and have lots of errands on the agenda.  I actually also plan on doing a little clothes shopping if I can find a deal or two.  I don't think I've bought an article of clothing in months, so I'm due a cute new shirt or two. :-)

It was nice. Last year I went with Henry strapped to my chest in a baby carrier. This year he stayed at home with Mike and I was much more productive.

  • Good morning!

Have fun shopping today, ladies!  Hope you find some good deals.

Wop, good luck with your meetings on Monday!

Strawberry picking sounds fun.  I've never done it.  But I cringe everytime I fork over cash for the pricey quarts at the farmer's market.  They're delicious though.

Speaking of strawberries, I made strawberry shortcake for dessert last night.  SIL and her BF came over for her birthday dinner.  I don't typically bake during the week because weeknight evenings are busy.  But it was her birthday, so I wanted to make dessert so I stayed up late the night before baking shortcakes and slicing strawberries.  And her and BF didn't eat any.  Sad  She said she was too full after dinner and had to take off to meet up with some friends.  If she's too full, she's too full... I understand.  But I was still a little bummed that I went through the trouble for nothing.

  • Wop, I worked for an organization with ~ 30 people.  Our employee manual had the policy outlined.  We got X weeks, paid.  Or up to X more weeks with a medical reason.

With Willa, there were issues with the HR person and I reading the policy wrong (it wasn't clear until some rewrites after my leave).  Sounds like you have clarity there.

The only meeting we had was to determine what I was in the middle of, and who would be handling it during my leave.  And then some training with those people.

I'm in the office again today and will try to keep you company.  Hopefully I don't get too busy covering for all of the people that are out on vacation!

I'm also doing some spur of the moment trip planning.  Our friends from Sweden will be in New Orleans this fall and I'm trying to put together a cheap, whirlwind weekend getaway that works around my schedule and L's lack of vacation days.  It's a crazy scheme, but we don't get to see them much and I LOVE New Orleans, so it's worth it.

I don't blame you--I would also be bummed.  Guests oohing and ahhing over my cooking is important to me.

I love strawberry shortcake.  I had the best ever in New Orleans at Commander's Palace.  L loves strawberries--it's his favorite fruit.  I once made him strawberry shortcake when we were first dating, and found out he doesn't like strawberry shortcake.  I was bummed.  Apparently he isn't a fan of the shortcake.

    So jealousE of this!

  • 4 weeks paid leave? I thought through the FMLA you get at the very least 6 weeks and up to 12 weeks at a discounted pay rate. Sort of like short time disability. Never been PG so not sure but I've seen a few friends get something like that.

They did ooh and ahh over my burritos, at least, so that was nice.  Smile

B and I love strawberry shortcake.  It's a June (and early July up north) treat and we only eat it with Michigan berries.

I don't think an employer is obligated to pay you anything, but they are paying me for 4 weeks.  It is my understanding FMLA isn't paid (at least that's what HR told me).  Maybe she was wrong?

First of all, FMLA only applies to employers of a certain size, with a certain number of employees within so many miles.  Secondly, FMLA doesn't provide any PAID leave.  When FMLA applies, it requires that the job be held for up to 12 weeks.

Short-term disability is completely different from FMLA and varies widely by company policy.

My understanding is that FMLA guarantees that you can have up to 12 weeks off and still go back to your job (i.e. they can't fire or demote you for taking medical/caregiver leave).  FMLA does not address payment issues.

Short-term disability covers payment and I think that's 4 or 6 weeks depending on whether you have a c-section or not (I think, I could be totally wrong there), and also depending on whether you work full time or part-time, and maybe some other factors.

I've never been on maternity leave, but I have created employment law PowerPoints on the subject.  Smile  So I think I'm right here, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

  • I have no real idea on what to cook right now. My grill is half A$$ed because if it is wet out I can't get the flames to go to the right temp it just likes to sit at low. I would like a new one ours is over 10 years old and I've had to replace parts the last couple of years. It's been very frustrating the last few months cooking. While I've gotten to be very good with the crock pot I'm kind of sick of it.

  • Could someone please do me a favor, and try to go to collegebookrenter dot com?

I'm trying to get a label to send a textbook back, and the page is coming up blank.  Wondering if it's just me.

  • Kasa, that's crazy!  I'm sorry you worked so hard and they didn't enjoy the fruits (hee hee hee) of your labor.

Kasa and DP have FMLA and leave right.   Payment depends on what kind of (if any) short term disability you/your employeer has.
