    Hi guys.

I hope at least some of the people who vote Tea Party are feeling some regret now.  Fiscally conservative = protecting the people who hosted all of those fundraising parties for candidates when they were unknowns.  I'm angry at not just the Repubicans, but the whole system.  If there weren't a major election next year, I know this would all go more swiftly.

I completely agree.  In all honesty, I do feel a little bad for Boehner that his caucus is making his job so difficult right now.

  • Oooh this one looks cool, but it's only available for 2 nights during the long weekend that we're going.

This is kinda fun.  There are some really neat places available for rent around Michigan.  :)

    I love this.

I get this and agree.  NPR had a segment talking about how impossible it is for third party/indy candidates in our system.  My little brother agrees and really rails against the two-party system (he's a Nader supporter).

While I confess to being somewhat of a party-line Dem and that I don't always see things objectively, it seems that ever since the '90s (think back to Gingrich, Clinton impeachment, "vast right wing conspiracy") Dems have been more willing to compromise while Republicans frame up the issue so it looks so simple to uninformed masses and play on people's emotions rather than appealing to their intelligence.  This drives me so bonkers that I have a really hard time taking anything they say seriously.  It just doesn't seem like this goes both ways to the same degree.

Yes, but part of the Speaker's job (and of course the Whip) is to get people in line.  James Carville (love the ragin' Cajun) did an interview on CNN recently where he called out the Majority Whip and said he needs to "crack those people into line".  It was great.

ETA:  I see that you mentioned that it's his job.  I'll defer to my favorite Spiderman quote "With great power comes great responsibility."

  • Sorry for interupting the political discussion.  Good thing this thread is called "randoms" otherwise my post would look completely ridiculous and out of place.    Big Smile

    Haha.

Cheboygan is gorgeous!  I would definitely prefer to be there over South Haven/Bloomingdale.

Ha, no need to apologize.  I saw your post and thought "that's random" kinda like my post about hiding someone on FB.

I thought about starting a new thread, but I was really looking more to vent than to start any kind of fight and thought that creating a unique thread might incite fighting.

When I want to post something, I just do it without catching up on the other posts.  After I post, I go back and catch up...lol.

Someone once told me that there was a study that showed that people who voted Republican tended to vote based on emotion.  And that doesn't happen nearly as much for those who vote Democrat.

I don't know if there's any truth to that (my source was kind of questionable), but it makes sense to me.  I think it's evident by the way each party speaks to their bases.

But, yeah, I completely agree with everything you said above, and it is so, so frustrating.

Don't apologize!  This is what makes the randoms awesome.  Also, I randomly threw in a story about granola earlier.  Totally random.

Also, Cheboygan would be nice because if you wanted to leave the cottage for a bit, you could spend some time in Mackinaw City or even on the island.

Yeah, to avoid preaching to the choir or throwing out something highly inflammatory on a public forum, I'll just agree with you.

If you spent one less night away, would you save money?  And then you could use that extra night at home to recover from your vacation.

I've heard that too, but I think I heard it with the phrase "negatively skewed emotions" like fear and anger.

It's interesting, because the social policies of the Dems are more touchy feely (taking care of the poor and other vulnerable populations), which is certainly emotional.

The whip is doomed here, I think.  The GOP is so fragmented, I do not envy his job.

I miss political discussions here.  And, I kind of miss the voices that were on the other side of the party line.

  • Mol, that area is so nice.  If you're willing to go that far, check out places on Lake Manistee.  We used to spend a week there every summer growing up.  Good water wadding for T, and everything else you're looking for.

    Granola.  Mmmmm.

  • GRSP, I agree with you on missing the other voices.  However, I feel like often those other voices would just give up rather than defending their point with actual evidence.  It would just be this "Well, no one's going to agree with me, so I'm going home" kind of thing.

I realize it can be tough to feel ganged upon (?), but then it seems that the duty to defend one's point is even greater in that situation.

  • See how I'm avoiding the Edwards topic?  My heart still weeps....

So... we're never going to go blueberry picking.  Henry is not on board with anything today.  3 tantrums.  I'm here and ignoring him, hoping he'll stop when he's not getting attention.

I've never heard of this site before, but I like the concept.  Neat!

This board was very pro-Edwards.  I noticed you avoiding that topic, GRSP.  :P

And you're kids are so funny.  I know that tantrums are not cool at all when it's your kids (or kids you're babysitting), but every time you mention them, I just think of how smart and cute they are.

  • The second dress is a lot more "dressy" imo.  If the wedding is in a garden or on a beach, you might be more comfortable in the first.

I agree with Kasa, that I also prefer the second.

The Alpena to Cheboygan trail was just refinished, I think. You could bring your bikes and get a great ride in!!

  • Our country would be in a much better position if people voted on issues rather than on party names. All of this political crap makes me SO MAD because, again, it's the people who can't afford to get screwed that will be screwed.

Alpena to Cheboygan would be a long ass bike ride, IMO!  But, Lake Huron is beautiful along that treck.

You could also head to the Rogers City area and check out the lighthouses.

Also, Alpena makes small children cry.  (Right, GRSP!?)

  • Sorry to prolong the political discussion for those not into it, but...

Mike and I were able to calmly compose emails to Amash. Though I feel my blood boiling and stomach turning just thinking about it!

Also, I hate that you have to "Like" a politician on FB in order to easily follow what they are doing. I want to keep an eye on Amash, not 'Like" him.

Sort of. It also has to do with the fact that sometimes I can't argue my point of view that well. I usually think of my self a liberal conservative. I'm not a right winged tool of the right or a tea party princess but I still lean a bit to the right. I think going through what were going through puts a different spin on things.

I used to vote on issues, but then it became clear that all of my opinions on issues lined up with one party far more than another.  So it was just easier to vote straight ticket.  I still pay at least some attention to what's going on and get the vast majority of my news from NPR, which despite accusations to the contrary, is fairly nonpartisan.
