So... we're never going to go blueberry picking.  Henry is not on board with anything today.  3 tantrums.  I'm here and ignoring him, hoping he'll stop when he's not getting attention.

I'm sorry to hear your day isn't working out how you'd like.

And I don't want to start the kid debate again, but just one thing -- on the con list for me is the unpredictability of kids.  How do you explain to a young child that he must pull himself together because blueberry picking is on the spreadsheet for this afternoon, gosh darn it!

GRSP, I agree with you on missing the other voices.  However, I feel like often those other voices would just give up rather than defending their point with actual evidence.  It would just be this "Well, no one's going to agree with me, so I'm going home" kind of thing.

I realize it can be tough to feel ganged upon (?), but then it seems that the duty to defend one's point is even greater in that situation.

Sort of. It also has to do with the fact that sometimes I can't argue my point of view that well. I usually think of my self a liberal conservative. I'm not a right winged tool of the right or a tea party princess but I still lean a bit to the right. I think going through what were going through puts a different spin on things.

That comment was not at all targeted to you, Deeder.  The people I had in mind no longer post here, and haven't since before you were a regular.

Oooh this one looks cool, but it's only available for 2 nights during the long weekend that we're going.

This is kinda fun.  There are some really neat places available for rent around Michigan.  :)

Cheboygan is gorgeous!  I would definitely prefer to be there over South Haven/Bloomingdale.

The Alpena to Cheboygan trail was just refinished, I think. You could bring your bikes and get a great ride in!!

Alpena to Cheboygan would be a long ass bike ride, IMO!  But, Lake Huron is beautiful along that treck.

You could also head to the Rogers City area and check out the lighthouses.

Also, Alpena makes small children cry.  (Right, GRSP!?)

Yes! hahaha - 71 miles in fact. Very long ride, indeed. The trail is part of the Michigander next year, BTW.  I was just naming the trail so if they want to do a portion of it (30 minute out, 30 minute back) they can. I should have been more clear!!

Sorry to prolong the political discussion for those not into it, but...

Mike and I were able to calmly compose emails to Amash. Though I feel my blood boiling and stomach turning just thinking about it!

Also, I hate that you have to "Like" a politician on FB in order to easily follow what they are doing. I want to keep an eye on Amash, not 'Like" him.

    Yes

First, why not go into that one, we've already tackled politics this morning.  Stick out tongue

Second, I love that both of us referenced our con lists today.

Our country would be in a much better position if people voted on issues rather than on party names. All of this political crap makes me SO MAD because, again, it's the people who can't afford to get screwed that will be screwed.

I used to vote on issues, but then it became clear that all of my opinions on issues lined up with one party far more than another.  So it was just easier to vote straight ticket.  I still pay at least some attention to what's going on and get the vast majority of my news from NPR, which despite accusations to the contrary, is fairly nonpartisan.

Same here.  Also, unfortunately, if a candidate is running and wants support of one party or another, there is pressure to fall in line with the planks of the party platform.

  • Okay.  Hoektastic has convinced me that it can be done.  So, I'm stepping away to spend the rest of my lunch on composing an email to my esteemed congressman.

You should post on Amash's FB page, "Just for the record, I'm watching you.  It doesn't mean I like you."

HA!  I almost didn't post that info because of awareness of you and your cons/spreadsheets...

On the other hand, I've never been a spreadsheet person or much of a planner.  And that shows in my parenting style.  I know plenty of people who value plans and efficiency way more than I and they are able to get things done with kids.  So, that's not allowed on your list.  ;)

Now, to round out the Henry sharing, he just got dressed on his own and then helped Willa was some dishes.  We're on our way!!  Have a fun mid-afternoon.

Stop and do yoga if you need. It is ok to take a break during such a strenuous task.

    Love this.

When we went to Texas a few years ago, we went out to a bar with my uncles.  We had been all over (haha not really) Texas at that point and we're talking about where we were.  H said he thought his friend lived around the area so he called and told him where we at, and he decided to join us.  Then we called my cousin, and he was able to join us too.  I think both had to drive about an hour.

It was the most fun impromtu gathering I'd had in a long time.  Have fun!

GRSP, glad to hear that Henry's mood has improved!  Have fun!

Diana, sounds like you'll have a fun time tonight!  We have never been to Founders.  Hopcat is our go-to place.  Perhaps we should check out Founders sometime though.

Also, the suggested FB clarification to Amash is absolutely hilarious.

You and B should come tonight!  L will be there as well.

Diana, Facebook can make things so weird with people from long ago.  In the olden days, you graduate from high school, move on, and never see those people again unless you choose to go to your high school reunions.  Now, it's like, "Oh, look, there's the guy I had a huge crush on in 8th grade and one time he kissed me on the school bus.  Should I be friends with him or not?  Weeeeiiiirrrrdddd."  (Or at least that's my experience.)

No kidding. I got a friend request last month from someone I went to school with from K-3rd grade in Minnesota. Wasn't even a close friend (as close as one can be at that age) and I obviously haven't seen the girl since we moved away. But now she wants access to all my personal information? Nope. I denied the request and then she sent me a message: "Hey, don't know if you remember me, we went to school together at X..." Well, if you have to explain who you are, you're not going on my friend list.

Do you have any idea how late you'll be there?  We were thinking about going out later tonight.  It wouldn't be until about 8:30 though, because I really want to get to that yoga class.

Also, the debt ceiling is probably best discussed with beers.  Smile

GRsp - Good luck berry picking! Hope you get a big haul!

  • I'm looking at making this for tonight. But want to use chicken breast only. It's says to cook in a crock pot on high 6 hours. I'm a bit worried because there really isn't any liquid and I'm only using 2 breast b/c they are so big. (I heart Sobie Meat's)

    4 Chicken thighs, skin on
    4 Chicken drumsticks, skin on
    2 pounds fingerling potatoes
    40 cloves of garlic

In a 6-qt crock pot, layer potatoes, garlic, chicken, and more garlic. Cook on high for approximately 6 hours, or until chicken is cooked through and garlic is soft.

I totally agree with this. XN has "liked" Amashole to keep an eye on him, but I can't stomach it to do the same. Of course, the fact that he was a jerk when I went to high school with him didn't do much to win favor in my eyes, even before knowing where he stood politically.

Speaking of MN, I talked to a guy the other day from MN with your maiden name and I thought of you.  :)
