Can I have some background on Sisugal?

Sisugal especially, I have only seen random posts from you once in a while, and it seems there is animosity with you and a lot of the regulars.

I'd love to know the backstory.  Your favorite color, etc.  Anything political you'd like to share.   *tosses a chocolate nosh your way*

 All responses invited.

Can we talk?

Re: Can I have some background on Sisugal?

  • I know from MM that she is extremely frugal, and that she rarely just congratulates someone on making a financial accomplishment. It is usually followed with a *but*.
  • She posts inflammatory stuff all the time that has absolutely nothing to support it, and when asked for a source, she refuses to respond.

    She's also negative about everything

Oh and no matter what the subject, she finds a way to say "Yes, but Obama...."

  • Does she ever respond to other posts? I'm wondering if she can see them. Some RSS readers will let you see the posts but none of the responses.

That is interesting.  I use an RSS reader for work but can see replies.

I'm only refering to MM-relate dpsts here: I wouldn't call her "extremely frugal". I think she is financially conservative and she usally gives very practical and realistic financial advice. She is blunt and straightforward, but usually spot on. She just doesn't sugar coat things. People don't like hearing that they can't afford their dream XXXX on their current income and that their luxury purchase wasn't a true "need" and not a wise use of an e-fund.

I like Sisugal, I am also a cons on this board. Personally, I never perceived the animosity to be personal, but rather more sarcastic in an eye-roll sort of way (the Pi jokes) related to the fact that Sisugal is opinionated and she is cons (which isn't exactly the majority on this board), but more because in posts that are discussing serious issues and require references to back-up thoughts/opinions/statements - she often doesn't provide any and many times there are none to support some of her statements. To that point, the dems are quick to pile-on other dems when they do the same thing.

I suppose what I really like about Sisugal is that no matter how much shits she takes and how many Pi jokes get thrown at her, she doesn't back-pedal on her position/statements (supported with facts or not), and it doesn't stop her  from still throwing her views out there, again, even when she doesn't back them up. She just sort of ignores the slams AND requests for references which I find amusing.

Forgive me, what is a "Pi" joke?  Pi like 3.14... I assume..

  • Velvet-sometimes people CAN afford the stuff and she will tell them it is a waste of money. Like the shoe or clothing posts. Or when arbor gold said she wanted to dye her hair and she told her it was a waste of money and to wear her natural hair color. I've seen that one a few times on MM.

Long ago, someone asked sisu for a source for one of her "Obama wants to enslave all the white people" comments or somesuch, and someone else responded "sisu doesn't need sources - she is pi, the infinite" (except a lot more clever than that). And it stuck.

Yes - it's used to point out that she, like other posters have said, throws opinions out there that are not supported by any facts and when a reference is requested, she will ignore the request and so somebody just says "Pi" - at least that's the way I understand the origin of the joke/dig.

Thanks for the info.  I think you should write out conservative.  Cons is an unfortunate abbreviation!

  • She has engaged with me a few times so I wouldnt say she never does---we have had a few back and forth discussions.

She has paid of 2 houses already which is amazing, imo and is very blunt about MM issues.  She is usually right in those matters.

I believe her dh survived cancer as she has posted about it in the past.

The Pi was funny for a minute...kind of like skittles...but got overplayed and eye-worthy/annoying very quickly.

  • she can see the replies.  i called her out in a post once for not replying to anything and she quoted me when she said she'd been busy with something.  it's the only time i've ever seen her follow up in a thread.

she has zero credibility IMO as she is apparently incapable of actual debate and rarely provides actual sources for her random statements.

I agree with this, I mostly only *know* her from MM where I think her advice is generally very good and well intentioned. She has a different take on consumer habits than most people and I find the difference refreshing.

I like Sisg from MM because sometimes people need the non sugar coated reality check-usually she's right on. I guess I've never seen her not engage someone if they posted to her, but I wish she would

See, I actually agree with Sisugal quite frequently on MM, but rarely on this board. Hair dye IS a giant waste of money :) (That I spend a fortune on....lol).

I think my major 'issue' with Sisugal is that she will never back up her statement - she will make some random post, then leave, without sources. Its frustrating because sometimes a great discussion could ensue, except that without the original source we have no idea where to even start the discussion.

  • She has always been nice to me.

I wish she would back up her statements, I think she could get some interesting discussions going.

  • I don't even dye my hair, but if I want to and have the means to do it, I don't think it is a waste. Especially if it makes someone feel better about themselves. I feel better when I get my locs professionally done. Is it a waste that I go to the salon and enjoy someone else doing it? I have the money and am in a good financial situation.
  • Honestly she usually makes me laugh. She posts something and them BAM a frenzy. I bet she is more liberal then Mommantrix but just like to spice things up. The Pi joke made me LOL and still does. Me reacting to her post today was unusual, it just irritated the heck out of me.

Ahh but I think the "Extremely frugal" ones are the ones that roll their own TP, ring up red peppers as green ones, and have their kids sleep in dresser drawers under the kitchen table in their one room apartment :)

I do think she had a much different opinion on what is a waste of money than the average poster, and she does give that opinion to posters when they don't ask for it, but when it comes to the true budget, need help posts, she's one the ones that gives the best, thoughtful advice.

And I get you that people don't want care to hear it. I guess it doesn't bother me because I've accepted that people value different things (for example, I wouldn't blink an eye if Knitty posted about dropping $500 on yarn, but I'd consider a $500 purse as a waste--and I know 99% of the posters wouldn't agree with that).

That said, I'd never bother to get in a political discussion with her, I'd consider *that* a waste of time.

She dropped in an MM post about purses where the OP had a budget of $500 and was looking for recommendations. Her only comment was she could not IMAGINE spending that much on a purse! LOL. Way to contribute.

Sure it is. So are makeup, flowers or houseplants, pets, dessert, two-ply toilet paper, clothing that isn't strictly functional, any sort of decoration for your house, anything you don't absolutely need to survive.

I was going to post the same thing, but then I backed out... I get more compliments on my $10 sale rack purses than any expense purse I've ever owned.

Yeah but just because you can technically afford to buy something doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good use of your money, which I think is usually what her point is in those kinds of posts. Like sure, you could buy this $500 handbag or you could invest it in your child's college fund, pump up your e-fund, pay off some debt, ect. ect. Doesn't mean you shouldn't buy the bag but it's good to think about all those things, you know?

  • I love MM Sisu. I would say 90 percent of the time I am in total agreement with her about money stuffs.

But over here? It's not so much that I disagree with her or whatever, it's just she pops in says, "OMG OBAMA !!!!!!11!!ELEVENTY!!!" and then *poof* she's gone. And it doesn't matter what the thread is about, we can be talking about Pinterest, she will pop in with the "OMG OBAMA !!!!!!11!!ELEVENTY!!!"

It used to be funny, but now it's tiresome.

  • I think that people have thought about those things-MM doesn't get a ton of posts from people that are in stupid debt asking if they can buy a 500 dollar purse. I have a well funded e fund, no debt other than the mortgage and a good amount in savings. Do I know that I can put that 500 in savings- heck yes, but I want to buy the purse. What is wrong with that? I could also buy all of my clothes from goodwill, free cycle, and learn to sew- none of which I'm going to do. Lots of things could be deemed a waste of money.
