I see three possibilities after reading this entire thread:

    1) people disagreeing with AW actually DON'T understand

    2) they do and they choose to keep doing things that offend her, which is kind of jerky

    3) they do but they're p!ssed that she's telling them what to do because she's condescending, so they aren't going to do something nice for her, which is kind of petulant

    4) they understand, but don't want to commit to changing anything about themselves for what is, in essence, something minor, which is kind of lazy, but understandable

I'm assuming you're somewhere around choice 3, but the vileness of your responses doesn't really seem to match up to AW's attitude in this thread. I think that's where people are confused about whether or not you have an outside vendetta against AW.

I feel like this deserves a poll. The next time you use adamwife's lord's name in vain, are you being:

    1) stupid

    2) jerky

    3) petulant

    4) lazy

No special snowflake option because there couldn't possibly be any other reason.

But I didn't mean lazy in a bad way! Stop using my words out of context! Wink

You clearly haven't read all the responses if you think mine are vile. There are several that are actually a lot more angry.

BTW, only one person (other than you) suggested that I have a personal grudge against aw, so I think by saying "people" are confused you're reaching a little bit here.

"I think that ANYONE who decides to engage in a behavior that they KNOW offends someone else is being rude.  Period. "

Would that include proselytizing?  Because I find that to be pretty damned offensive, but it hasn't stopped one single Christian I know from continuing to do it.  Which is precisely the reason why I mostly don't care if my frequent use of JFC or GFD-it offends a  Christian.  They offend me regularly by trying to legislate their faith onto everyone else, by their lack of respect for the faith of others, and by their undying need to convert everyone to their own faith. After so much lack of respect from the other side, you pretty much quit caring if you're offending them or not.

I swear, you and Toledo are making me all girl-crushy today.

Maybe Jesus will track some of his quotes back to this thread and create a Nest account to respond.  Then we'd have a PCE-style holy trinity for the week.

  • I tried, I honestly tried, to read it all before responding, but I just can't.

    Here we go.

I say "Jesus Christ" a LOT IRL, and I'm sure I've said it on this board, and have used the Christ on a Cracker GIF.

Honest and for true, when I use it, it's using it the way my mother used it.  She used to say, "Jesus Christ, Give Me Strength!" when dealing with an untenable situation. It was kind of an exasperated prayer from a confused agnostic.

She would also sometimes say things like, "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and All the Saints in Heaven!!" but, again, in a kind of "give me strength to deal with this craziness" way.

(She used to also give her Jewish boss a load of crap for saying "Jesus Christ", saying something to him akin to, "Hey, he's ours, you're stuck with "Holy Moses!", but it was all in good fun.)

So, mom asks for strength from JC, and sometimes shortens the phrase to just JC. Daughter, who's less religious than mom, still uses the phrase that was tossed around her house.

I never ever though that what my mother was doing was a blasphemy. She was asking for help, albeit in a loud voice without averted eyes and hands not in prayer position... but how is that a blasphemy?

(and, FTR, my mother is very loud and doesn't avert her eyes or bow her head in pretty much any circumstance)

    I am the 99%.
  • Andplusalso...

JC, or even JFC, isn't an INSULT. If you use N----- or F-- or C---, those are INSULTS.

I see where PP was called an "idiot Christian"... it's the "idiot" part of that phrase that's the insult, not the "Christian" part.

No kid on the playground is taunted by other kids calling him "Christian! Christian! Christian!"

    I didn't say martyr, Tef, did I?

I said persecution, which I know she said she didn't feel. She said she feels offended. I can't tell her how to feel. But she also can't tell us how to behave. That's kind of the end, really.

I cringe every time I see some of you post the name of my Savior in vain on here.  I find it incredibly offensive and it almost hurts a little to read it.  I know, I'm probably crossing into overly sensitive, get over it territory, but whatever.

I'm curious - do some of you realize how offensive it is to say when you say it or is it just out of habit that it comes out?  Does knowing that it is offensive make you think twice about using it in the future?

I'm curious where exactly there she is telling someone how they should behave?

Everyone is touting that this is a public message board so they can post whatever they want.... well she can start a thread over whatever she wants.  She made a statment and explained how she feels something and asked for other's input on what she said and instead everyone started attacking her for trying to "ban others' free speech" which I don't see her saying at all.  But whatevs.

This is what I got from her o.p., as well.

I am only on page 5, but this is how I took her OP too.

I think everyone should be required to change their signature to a list of key words/themes/phrases that offend them. Therefore every time someone posts in a thread they can hit Control+F to determine whether they will inadvertently offend anyone within. YWIA.

"We tend to be patronizing about the poor in a very specific sense, which is that we tend to think,

I find it mildly amusing and ironic how certain folks are offended by AW being offended.

  • image+adamwife+:

I said that after I said none of us are Jesus.  Jesus points out sin.  It's not my place to do it (unless I'm doing it to change my own behavior).

Isn't that exactly what you did - point out how many people are sinning when they take the Lord's name in vain (and how that bothers you so much because of how much you love Jesus)?  Since you don't do it, you didn't point it out to change your behavior - therefore you pointed out sin to change other people's behavior.

I don't think I say it that often and I understand why you are offended.  I don't understand the need to passive aggressively ask those who use it to stop, given that it's a public message board.

  • imagepixy_stix:
    imageDylanite:

I'm not asking that at all.  I'm asking for someone to define in their own way what it feels like to be offended.  How bad is the hurt?  How does this hurt resonate with themselves, if at all?  Does it bring to mind something they'd otherwise wish to forget?  Probably not, but these are the questions I'm seeking answers to. I'm not asking for the difference between something that is or isn't offensive.

Really, I'm just skimming the thread but...

Remember when you were so defensive about continuing to use the r-word, and proceeded to use it in any post that you could? I came awfully close to blocking you that day, and I don't have anyone blocked.

The r-word deeply offends me because I have deeply humiliating and frustrating memories tied to that word. Example - my sister pressed into a corner, crying hysterically, as several kids at the school surrounded her in a semi-circle taunting her with cries of "You're retarded!" until I got there and shoved them out of the way. Then dealing with the aftermath of her not understanding why the kids didn't like her, and not wanting to go back to school ever again.

    That's where offense stems from.

I, personally, don't have that type of offense tied to someone taking the Lord's name in vain. So maybe that offense has a different stem. Which circles around to answering your question, every person has a different reaction to words used, and trying to define it by asking specifically, "Where does it stem from?" is useless.

Oh Pixy....I didn't know.  My heart hurts for you and your sister.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

AW, is a change in behavior the only way to show understanding of an idea or concept?

I think it depends on what you are trying to understand.  I think part of understanding is realizing the implication.

If someone were to tell me it is hurtful for me to have a picture of my baby in my signature because they just lost their baby, I'm not sure how I could understand what they are saying and continue to keep the picture in my signature.  I could say I understand, but don't care enough about the person to remove it, but to me that shows a lack of understanding.  I may be understanding it intellectually, but there is an emotional component that I must not be getting.  Unless of course I lack certain things, like empathy, or am a sociopath who enjoys causing others pain.

That isn't the same thing as someone using the Lord's name in vain.  Just as example to show how understanding, IMO, goes beyond just the intellectual.

Like I said above, I recognize that there are people who intellectually understand and just don't care about the implications.  But I don't define those people as "understanding".  Does that make sense?

But don't we know that tickers, birth/pregnancy announcements, kid posts and kid pictures DO hurt some people?

There have been threads about it, I know.  I think the general consensus was similar to this thread- people understand why it hurts, but wiping all non-baby boards of babies or not talking about important things in one's life thread are both too much to ask.  However, of course don't direct baby talk directly at people who you know it bothers, or do things like declare one's crazy fertility more than once, and more than once attribute it to things you do, because that would just be insensitive.

  • I admit I could not get entirely through this thread so maybe this was said already.

But Christains consider the name of their Lord to be holy. Using it in cursing is offensive to them.

Most of you said you understand this, but you don't give a sh*t.

Is this the same board that said that people deserved to die because they had dared to burn the koran? You know, because burning the koran is offensive to the muslim faith?

Yeah, you make a lot of sense.

I totally love those who said they would respect AW's wishes and adjust their speech. You are actually being consistant, even when you don't really understand her view.

Those who don't give a sh*t, remember this the next time you are offended by any word or phrase.

My goodness! Who said that? No one deserves to die for burning a book, and the fact that some Muslims were THAT offended is RIDICULOUS. It is a book. Yes, I get that it's your holy book. Lovely. It's a book.
