Probably flammable, but I want to ask anyways
Re: Probably flammable, but I want to ask anyways
I agree with you. But that was the conclusion of many on this board.
TBH, knowing this board, I suspect anyone advocating for the death of someone who burned a Qur'an would be flamed off the board. I remember one thread in particular where it was a unity horse that the Afghani reaction to Qu'ran destruction that resulted in some deaths was insane.
I am offended hen anyone suggested ND doesn't stand a chance or a national championship.
I will try. It was about the soldiers being killed for burning the korans that prisoners had written in.
The feeling of some was that the soldiers should have known better than to do that.
That is what I meant. Minority is in quotes because I wonder why her being a minority should even matter.
I'm offended that in 13 pages (or is it 14?) I have only convinced 2 people that FWP is an offensive internet meme. OFFENDED.
I'm also offended that I have a conference call in 51 minutes. I would insert some expletives to explain my extreme offense but apparently that's offensive so just imagine me typing a lot of nestified swear words here.
I found your argument much more persuasive than the JC, JFC, etc. argument, if that helps.
I'm far more likely to refrain from engaging in FWP posts or using that phrase now.

If I can locate it in this morass (note, that's a word, not an attempt to sneak in a swear) I will repost! It's not something that offends me to the point that I judge people who use it (which is why I said it's not a great example), I just think it's careless language and careless in a way that can offend.
Am I in a Muslim community? I would wear the hijab.
But I think there is a major difference between wanting someone to wear an uncomfortable garment and asking them to avoid using certain words. In wearing the garment you aren't giving the person an alternative - you either wear the garment or risk being offensive. In asking to avoid the words you give alternatives - there are other ways to express the same thoughts with different words. I'm not taking your ability to express yourself away.
The context of this question wasn't really dealing with anything other than words like retard and gay. We're talking about conversation.
Aw: I didn't read all of this but was it my post?
I it was I will try, but it is part of who I am. And I am Christian. My priest says it all the time in social settings. For mw it is much better than swearing whixh i fibd rashy and vulagar. It's part of us. I don't want to offed you but at the same time your view of Christianity isn't the only one kwim?
I think you have to understand that you're on an internet message board and you can't expect the same sort of social graces you might receive in person.
I'm not a Christian, and I use these phrases, although not often (omg is used often, I'll admit, but I'm much more likely to use a run of the mill swear than JFC or GD). But particularly around my in-laws, and more devout members of my own family I put a lid on it. I'm not going to do the same on a message board. I'm offended by biitch and slut. Those words really bother me. I've brought it up in context of discussions about those words specifically, but I'm not going to ask people to stop using them here because it's not anyone's responsibility to keep track of the list of things that offend the thousands of posters around the nest.
I hope you compared it to the n-word and murder just to stir shiit. I know you've made some racially insensitive comments in the past, but you cannot actually compare the way you feel when people say "oh my god" vs. someone being called the n-word. And I hope this has been resolved in the last couple of pages I couldn't read.

Bullshit. You are like the fox news of PCE.
"Retard" and "gay" are insults. Blasphemy isn't an insult to God, it's an affront to God, in your religious beliefs. You are asking someone else to observe your religious customs, and it's irrelevant if our society has Judeo-Christian origins. We are not a Judeo-Christian society.
ETA: The comparison is really, really pissing me off. No one is saying about something else as an insult, "That's really God!". No one is looking up at the heavens and calling a higher being "God" as a derogatory term. People don't use "retard" etc. because somebody might not want to hear them (even though that is also true), they don't use them because it's wrong and insulting to the people to which they apply. Blasphemy is only wrong if you subscribe to the religious beliefs for which it is a part. It is exactly analogous to saying "Heavens to Betsy!" (using a name in an empty way), and no one named Betsy is offended by that. It's being offended by someone else not following your religious beliefs, and that's wrong IMO.
I'm so glad I finally made it through all these pages just so I could read this line. The irony in the statement is hilarious.
Yes, it includes proselytizing. Now you 'internet know' one Christian who thinks it's rude. Once you ask the person to stop or tell them that they are offending you, it should stop. They are showing you no respect at all. That is not how you should treat others and it is not the way to get people to agree with your point of view. I also don't legislate my faith. I am personally against abortion but I think it should be legal for all.
I think Christians like that are earnest, but misguided.
All I have to say is that he is my savior too.
That was me, and I do know a few people who use the word "Christian" as an insult. If I say something in a discussion that they disagree with, they'll respond with a snarky, dripping with sarcasm comment of, "That's because you are a Christian." It is very much meant as an insult.
I guess I struggle to see how it is offensive that I don't follow someone else's faith. It would be like me being offended if someone else takes birth control. I might not like it ( although I actually am on bc...just an example as a catholic) but to be offended? It's the same thing here. Saying his name in vain is your faith. That's fine, but you shouldn't be offended I am not following it. My saying it is not an attack on you or God or Jesus.
However, because you are offended I will try not to. But I do not understand it and I do not think it is fair to ask others to follow your faith. Respect it? Of course! But I shouldn't have to follow it. I know you don't think that is what you are doing...you think people are insulting god by saying it. But that is not what is going on.
Just because I was incredibly intrigued to read it, as well, here it is:
Actually it's kind of the opposite. Since most FWP are petty mundane gripes it creates this perception that the reason THESE are FWP is that so called "third world people" are so consumed with life and death matters that they are fundamentally different and don't have mundane complaints. But the reality is that 99% of FWP I read are nearly identical to complaints that my "third world" friends have too. Just because you live in Nigeria doesn't mean you never have days when your pants are too tight or when you're hungover or when someone is texting you about a party you can't attend or your new DVD is scratched etc. Also most people who live in the "third world" don't really like that phrase but you can't have first world problems without a third world.
And, FTR, I agree with it. I don't know how often I've used the phrase, but I don't think I'll be doing it from here on out.

Mx, I sincerely admit you're highly influential here. But this is where I draw the line.
